If you want to improve your use and understanding of how flash works, get it. It's the best investment I've made in a long time. It "upped" my game a lot.

I thought it was well worth the cash outlay. I got in on the initial preorder and have been very happy with my purchase. Inspired me to get my on camera flash off camera and outdoors instead of all my off camera stuff being in studio.

interesting, but pricey. I love Zach's stuff but can't see the $250 right now.

Hi Hawk,

I do tend to agree with you but as an example.... I have all the Dean Collins DVD's and although they were not cheap, I learned so much and found him to be one of the most interesting people and teachers when it comes to light, controlling light and understanding lighting.

It's hard to place value on some of these items and clearly some are NOT worth the expense but here and there we do find some brilliant people that have new or innovative ways to approach and teach topics in a way that we just can't find online or in forums and books.

One comment I see very often from people is that when information is presented online and in books they simply can't learn or grasp concepts, but when it's explained and demonstrated in a clear and sensible way they pick up on things faster and easier.

That's just my take on this.

oh, I agree on the principal of it. I just can't find the $$ right now to justify the expense. I've been too caught up in buying your old gear ;)

I've own and watched both Strobist and OneLight DVDs.

The Strobist DVD is a great way to document a workshop, you learn using a one light source to multiple light setups.

The OneLight DVD focuses on using one light and the fundamentals of aperture, shutter speed, ISO, etc. The photo shoots that Zack shows on the DVD reinforces these fundamentals. So if you a newbie to off-camera then OneLight DVD is easy to follow.

The material presented in both DVDs are essentially the same concept... OFF CAMERA LIGHTING. Its just a matter of how the material is delivered to you.

Strobist DVD = straight forward, no frills, basic editing. Limited chapter skipping, if you want to watch a particular section you have to fast forward like a VHS tape.

OneLight DVD = same as above, but has the bells and whistles when it comes to editing. More granularity when it comes to chapter skipping.

FWIW, I wouldn't be able to fully understand what I've learned on the Strobist DVD without the OneLight DVD. Then again, I probably understood the OneLight DVD the first time around because I already watched the Strobist DVD.

The DVD's are like peanut butter and jelly... by themselves it's good, but when you combine the two its AWESOME!
