I like the first one. The 2nd one the color seems lacking...especially the background/grass/trees.

It could do with a little exposure boost.

The second needs a bit more saturation in the background or some vignetting to take your eyes off it.

But I think you got good lighting on both.

The first one is very good. It's a nice portrait with lvoely colours. The second, however, seems dull in comparison, and it looks like the boy isn't looking at the camera.

I guess it's just me but the 1st one seems a little too contrasty.

Another thing to look at is composition, your subject is centered in each of these photos. Try composing the image differently in other shots. The photos have a different feel when composed in a more interesting fashion.

I don't think it's you, the color temp looks off in it, I would suggest colling it down a little. And I agree about the second one, I think it needs to be warmed a little, and make the colors pop a little more. You're off to a good start though!

i not a fan of centering the object. maybe use the rule of thirds a bit more.

Fill flash would help pop the eyes. Rule of thirds has been mentioned and the subject seems very self conscious. Perhaps just shoot him more. Looks a bit stiff. Second photo is maybe a tad OOF? Composition, Compostion, Composition. Keep shooting!

Also, less distracting clothing would help... My .02

If you are really just learning I suggest learning the camera functions before you learn the in and outs of post processing.

There is a lot that can be done in camera when taking the shot that makes the image better than most can do in post processing. There are super talented people out there when it comes to photoshop, but even the most artistic will tell you that having a good image to start with makes all the difference.

Start with little things like composition or exposure.

In both of these you have the subject dead bang in the middle. He is a good looking kid, but you can spruce up the picture just by framing it a little better.

In the second shot the tree makes a very cool partial frame. If you can get back there take a shot with the tree creating a frame on his left and position it so the subject isn't dead center.

Film is free with digital cameras. Go take lots and lots of pictures. That said, before you hit the shutter look at the shot and make sure it looks the way you want it to. I always leave a little room when I can for cropping to 8x10, 5x7 etc.

Hope this helps a little.

Check this article in Wikipedia out for a breakdown of the rule of thirds.
