My C:Windows folder is full of these things - 181 of them, in fact.

Does anybody know (a) what they are; (b) do I need them; and (c) is it possible they are contributing to the gradual slow-down of my PC?

Those folders are created whenever you install a Windows Update or hotfix and they contain the Uninstall information for each fix.

If your computer is working properly you can safely delete them and save some hard disk space.

Just be sure NOT TO delete the folder with the name $hf_mig$
