Pic isn't coming up, but I would assume it's the port for the WFT-E3 wireless grip that you're asking about

It's for the WFT-E3A (external link) grip, which adds wi-fi connectivity but doesn't work as a normal battery grip (the battery inside it will not power the camera at all, but only the grip).

That's the whole point of the connector the OP asked about.
Data transfer and camera control. Just like you can control the camera's shutter through the USB port.

why not build this into the battery grip?

Here's a link to the WiFi grip:
http://www.adorama.com …archinfo=WFT-E3&item_no=1 (external link)

As you can see, there isn't a post that goes into the cameras battery compartment. The standard battery stays in the camera, and the grip has its own battery to power its features. It's for a different purpose than the standard BG-E2N grip.

You can also see that this grip costs about $800.00 :)

Here's a post from someone who bought one of these grips:

Pretty cool device if you have a purpose for it.

Oh and it actually has an AF-ON button. :)

sorry about that.

just for the record, that is a dumb rule.

No problem.

I will not discuss the rule here other than to say that there is a very good reason for it. If you want to discuss it use the Forum Talk section.

Not off the top of my head. You might search though, just to make sure.

I should have just posted the fixed link (without the 'img.' at front) instead of embedding the picture.
Thanks for changing my post.
