F-18

I had O.T. at work last night, was a little slow I was able to shoot an F-18 taking off. It was dusk so bumped the ISO to a 1000.

I like the 2nd shot, nice job for those conditions

In the first, looks like someone just took a Flaperon to the head or just missed getting skewered by the DACT pod.

Nice atmospheric mood in the second.

It was tommy ducking the jet blast. There was one more ready to leave.

2nd shot is very nice.

thanks, not sure how good it would turn out it starting to get dark.

Is this at CFB Coldlake?

Yes sir. they were in town to do a fly over at the foot ball game, and back to Cold Lake.

Seeing that you are in Alberta, have you been at the Maple Flag air combat training held at Coldlake?

Nice pair of photos !!.. The second one does it for me, AB just throws it over the edge.

Best day I had with F-18s was shooting a session inside Ames Research Center, for NASA. I was kicking the dust in the shade by the Naval Station Airstrip, and I saw a flight of two F-18s doing a flyover. After pulling a U turn -he he, gotta love my aviation terms- they came in slow and low. It was incredible. Funny thing is, they taxied and parked just inside the perimeter chickenwire fence, literally some 15 yards between me and the wingtip. Took their helmets off, little monk caps, and just went inside to chill. It seemed unreal how they arrived, as if it had been in a bycicle, or a beat up car.

Needless to say, I photographed the hell out of those two birds. Within minutes I had the internal Police checking on my credentials, calling the PAO, and confirming my presence. But still, I had never been so close to such divine machinery.

At any rate, your photos reminded me of that experience.

Yup if you hang out long enuf you will see that it happens at least twice a month. When it first started they were armed (after 9/11) but lately no ord off the wings. That is our CAP for the greater Bay Area. They fly up from SoCAL and hang for the weekend, and go back, usually Sunday.

Ahh, thanks for the info. I did not want to ask, as it was clearly a natural thing for everyone else, and I did not want to be the one asking the question. I just tried to look cool, and kinda nodded, yeah, Eighteeners, see 'em all the time..Actually I've been known to jump in and warm up a few for the pilots, ya know, goingh through the checklists, that sorta thing..[slowly heading for the closest exit, before the boot gets completely stuck inside the mouth]

Nah, I didn't say a thing. Acted as if it were normal, but I had to find a restroom and do some weird version of a double-camera-strap happy dance inside a bathroom stall. Bit awkward.

I hate having to make that maneuver...

I can never decide if I want to lead with the right shoulder or the left...

Correction on my last answear, this was in Calgary, Alberta. On their way back to Cold Lake.
