Well you got some detail in the second shot. Apart from the points mentioned above (ie flash, aperture f8-F11, manual focus etc., I found when I first started macro a big breakthrough in fly eye detail when I started shooting at 1.5:1 or above. You'll need some extension tubes on your macro lens (eg Kenko) for that.
