I will use equivalent FL so we don't need to care about body and sensor size.

Unless you have absolutely no space to back up, I suggest use no shorter than 30mm FF equivalent for group shots. Use longer FL if you can, like 35mm or 50mm. The problem with short FL is perspective distortion: People in front row will appear noticeablely bigger than people in back row. People in middle appear bigger than people on the outside. People on the outside appear to be wider (fatter) than they actaully are ..... All in all, it doesn't give a natural look.

I agree, with only comment being that I have found 28mm (135 format equiv.) to be safe, having covered weddings in three different formats (APS-C, 135, 645)

Rent a lens, I'd say the 16-35. (I'm assuming a 1.6 crop)

Then get as far back as you can and zoom in as much as possible.

The 24-70 is pretty soft wide open.

Really you want to avoid shooting groups wide open. If you have a larger group in two or more lines you need F8 or F11. Wide Angle lenses will help keep more of the group sharp compared to a longer focal length ( which is not so good for groups in any case). Use longer focal lengths from 60-90 for individual portraits when you can open up to F4.

i've used the 16-35 here and there.. we also used it for our wedding
I feel like distortion on there is simply horrible.. I felt the 24-35 was better on the 24-70 2.8
