Looking to buy a bracket for off camera flash for my 40d and 580EX II. I want it to work for portraits - Birds - and macro on and off tripod. What would you suggest??

I hope when I die....My wife doesn't sell my toys for what I told her they cost!!

If you are using this for any 'business' shooting (not merely as a hobby) the Newton Camera Bracket (at $180-225) is my hearty recommendation over anything else in the $150-380 range of products!). Many threads on POTN about this collection of products.

The Newtons work nicely, with or without the battery grip...it is configurable.

Portraits, birds and macros are applications that usually have different bracket requirements. I'm not sure you'll be able to find one that will do a good job at all three applications in the price range you are looking at. So, the question is, which of the three uses is more important to you?
