Need help with outdoor off-camera flash setup

Need help from expert. I need to setup 2 flash system for outdoor use.
What i have is 40D , 580EX (mk2) + EZ540 with optical slave unit. What i encountered is EZ540 not firing (maybe optical unit not sensitive enough for outdoor use) .Can i connect the PC cord from 580EX (mk2) to slave unit? Will it work?
