Get creative with this (images within)

I'm trying to learn to effectively use my equipment and thought I was going to experiment with a self-portrait. I was trying to light the seamless with a double blue rosco filter on a 580EX with Horrible results. Anyone want to take a moment to help me improve this? Perhaps help a grad student with no time accelerate his learning curve. Don't even know where to start. I'd like to do something creative with filters and harsh shadows.

If you want a blue background but a properly colored subkect subject you have to stop the blue light directly hitting the subject. That's as simple as putting something in the way, cardboard so long as it doesn't get too hot and catch fire.

A professional would probably use a grid or barn doors.

I have achieved my best results from using a dark grey or black seamless, and shooting the gelled flash from behind the subject. I hope that made sense....
