I'm a twist-lock man myself....

2 main reasons I went with twists over snaps are:

1) If you shot outdoors in windy conditions, snaps can create more wind turbulance over the tripod legs which in turn creates more vibration.
2)Snaps have a way of getting caught on things when you are trying to store them and that just bugs me.

Both very good points!

I have both, snaps are by FAR the better option.

My Benbo twists creep, pull the skin off my fingers when tightening and take an age to do and undo. My Manfrotto snaps snap on and snap off, easy.

That's because you have crappy twists. The Gitzo ones are great.

i think that's right. since buying a benro monopod and tripod i am now firmly in the twist camp :D.

but the aluminum manfrotto tripod legs will drop into place by gravity and set-up just as quickly. however, the magfiber legs don't slide freely and are a hassle to set up.

anyhow i love the twist legs now and with a good CF tripod i think 4-section is the way to go because the tripods are so stable.

I've grown used to snaps, and have had great luck with them on my Manny tripod and monopod.

I have an older tank of a "who-dunnit" tripod with twists, and find it a PITA to work with. Granted, it's likely because it's some older cheapo thing, though.

I think it comes down to which you personally prefer and what you've grown used to.

Had snaps now twists...I think unless you have gitzo twists you may experience a creep etc etc...the new g-lock is even more rugged and stable due to the gravity effect it has...the more weight placed on a locked down leg/section the tighter it becomes :)

the manfrotto snaps where quick yes but after only the first day with my gitzo I can easily come close to matching the manfrotto in a full extension race and the gitzo I have has 4 sections instead of the manfrotto's three;)

I have a Manfrotto 055MF3. Although I like the way the snap locks work, it irritates me that the leg sections don't move smoothly through them. On several of my tripod's leg sections they kind of bind in the last couple inches of extension. I have to kind of snap them out hard to overcome that friction.

On the Gitzo GT2530 I used to have, I could just give the two lock rings a 1/2 twist (both at the same time) and the legs would extend just by gravity. It was pretty slick.

I wish I hadn't sold it.

I wish my GT2530 would simply extend by gravity alone! (like my Bogen 3221 would)

that was the first reason that had me looking elsewhere for a different tripod.

Really, I thought I was the only one who had that problem...I never have complained about it before because I though it was all the salt water/mud/ and sand that I've put it through ;)

I never really wanted to unscrew all the stupid joints and get in there because I knew i'd eventually be buying a better one...but yea I don't even close the last section anymore because I'd never be able to get it open again :) My tripods go through hell --- and some don't come back (OO Ha Ha Ha Haaaa)

Oh, I'm not comfortable without that secure sound only a flip lock makes. There is no doubt that leg is locked.

All in all, if you purchase quality equipment, it just comes down to personal preference. I have snaps on my CF tripod, and twists on my Gitzo monopod. I prefer the snaps.

Get a Snap-aroo, and dance the Twist, because you've made the right choice my friend.
