Greetings, I'm brand new to this forum and am a full-time Rv traveler who wants to more professionally chronicle my travels. Years ago, I bought a Contax RTS (used) with 3 nice Zeiss lenses (Distagon T* f:2/28mm; Tele-Tessar T* f:3.5/200mm; and Planar f:1.4/50mm)

I've ordered a C/Y-EOS adapter to try these on a friend's 30D and hope to buy the new 50D.

I would appreciate any advice/recommendations on:

1. Getting these lenses cleaned/tuned-up. (Who, where, how much to pay, etc. ?)

2. Isn't the kit lens with the 50D (28-135mm) worth the extra $200 or so (vs. body only)?

3. Is there a market for these Zeiss lenses?

Thanks in advance...

dg

Zeiss does have it own repair facilities (in Europe.) Most good repair shops can clean and lube lenses. Yes, there is a market for them indeed. I'd give them all a try on your new Canon DLSR first though.

Hey TBD, nice looking rig. And welcome to the forum..

But I think you'll have better luck with the non-Canon questions here: www.manualfocus.org (external link)

I'd say definitely (assuming that's the lens it actually sells with when available); if you like it you've got a $400 lens for $200 and if you don't you can sell it for about $300 for a quick profit.

Zeiss Germany will quote you for servicing the old lenses but be warned that if work is required the cost is likely to be several times the price of an EX+ replacement copy on the used market. If you just want them cleaned then I'd phone around your local camera specialists to see if they can help.

There is definitely a market for the C/Y Zeiss lenses. The 28/2 'hollywood' that you have is particularly sought after.

Forget about Zeiss Germany and any repair facility in Europe. There's a fellow named Mark Hama in Georgia (Marrietta, I think). I sent my Zeiss 85/2.8 to him a few weeks ago and he CLA'd it for $95, including return shipping.

Mark used to work for Contax, so he's well-trained and experienced. Check out his website and shoot him an email or telephone...he's very knowledgeable and helpful. Turnaround time took about a week for my lens...

EDIT: And if you're interested in selling your Distagon 28/2, let me know.
