ok, BEFORE you all start bashing me:

1. I love Canon
2. I am a Pro Fashion photographer so photography IS my main field
3. I posted this hoping to see what you guys think on the new 5D having Movie Mode
4. Nikon D90 got it: http://chsvimg.nikon.com …ng/lineup/d90/en/d-movie/ (external link)
5. I hate Nikon btw... lol
6. It's just a nice feature that would have me sell my camcorder and just have my dslr on vacations with family!

Let the bashing begin...

Nick

I really really really hope that they include the movie mode...
I know I'm not going to buy a camcorder..
I don't think I'm going to be using it all the time either.
But I definately see me using it time to time! It's so cool afterall!

Personally I won't want it. It would just take up space/electronics that could go to making the CAMERA part better.

I'm gonna buy the 5D mkII to have a better CAMERA... you know what I mean.

:)

If it doesn't compromise the IQ and there are no additional costs, ($2,500-$3,000) I'd be very happy with it. I would definitely use my camera even more thus, getting my money's worth.

It's like dating a girl with a very touchy feely hot best friend.
Or buying a car with a sound system and tv's.
A massage with a happy ending.
Getting robbed and catching the thief, then beating the crap out of 'em because he's just a nerdy kid who thought he could be a ninja.

You get my drift....

Having those things are one thing...but the add-ons are just icing on the cake. Wouldn't you want to be rubbed down with icing? I know I do...*Whistles for Helga*
I love uni-brows.

Yes, IF. ;)

Would you rather have movie mode or say... GPS?

That's a good question.

Personally (being a video guy) I prefer a video camera to be a video camera and a still camera to be a still camera.

Feels a lot like a P&S to me.

JMHO YMMV.

Well, what if the CAMERA part is significantly better .. but it still has the ability to capture video?

What then?

GPS is a much better option in my opinion, if I had to choose between them.
however, electronics as they are, I don't see why it shouldn't have GPS as well. c'mon!

but, the ninja always knows where he is.....or isn't...... ! :)

Ninja-san, I think you should call up your friends in cannon and press on them like only *YOU* know how! :D

IF that is true. I wouldn't mind.

But I'd wonder what they compromised on to put that feature in. I'd still personally prefer another still photo related feature than video mode.

Then again, my video camera cost a lot more than my still camera.

However, there's nothing optical or electromechanical in a mid-range video camera that isn't already in a still camera.

They all have:
Lens
Iris
Shutter
Sensor
Recording Media

If anything, the necessary parts of an SLR (most notably the mirror assembly) have a bigger impact on the video recording process than video recording has on taking stills...

If it replicated the DOF control of a DSLR and was decent quality. I guess why not.

The D90 can shoot in 720p. Which is not very flexible, but OK. Not everyone likes progressive. It wouldn't be a replacement for a decent video camera, but it would be OK.

It would require some extra computing power, but I think they could fit it in.

Still, would NOT bother me if it didn't have movie mode.

With AF live view, you don't have to worry about the mirror.

Still, I think it isn't a necessary feature at all. It's more a toy to use occasionally for fun. If you want to make a proper video, you definitely wouldn't be using it. Unless youtube was your market.

If they DID make it better than a video camera. I wonder why Canon would bother making video cameras anymore. LOL.

It's like the still function on a video camera. OK, but not a replacement for a DSLR.

I had a Fuji P&S that had video. I think I used it once to test it and once to show someone. I don't see HQ video and a DSLR sharing the same body for quite a while. It wouldn't be a deal breaker for me but I doubt I'd use it. I'd just rather see the real estate used for something else like GPS or wireless capability.

haven't you seen the videos of the d90? DOF was awesome. i'd just wonder about how long my battery would last keeping the IS motor whirring (or how long my IS motor would last being active that long). also i'd want something more than 5 minute clips. but honestly i wouldn't mind movie mode. stuffs in place...why not enable it.

That is one area where it would be interesting. DOF in video is very deep usually (not like film). Then, those shot were in a dark environment. Boost the gain (that's video for ISO) and zoom in a bit and you could replicate those shots with a decent video camera. Shutter speed may suffer, but hey, they're shooting 24p anyway.

But other than that, the quality wouldn't be great.

I can't imagine turning up for a video shoot with a still camera. My clients would be maad!
