Cognitive Dissonance

I unfortunately have to admit that it's a bit over my head. I think it works well compositionally, however.

Very cool composition, but as a psych grad student, I'm not sure I understand the cognitive dissonance. Is the dissonance meant for us, or is the golden apple supposed to be sensing it? Just curious, but regardless, it's a cool shot.

The possible choices in the Garden of Eden? The original forbidden fruit? ? ? ? ?

I am not feeling conflict in this photo....difference, yes, but nothing that makes me uncomfortable....

I do like the photo for the composition and DOF, one of your best to date for me.

Like the idea, hate the setting. Every time I look at it I want to see those apples outside, not surrounded by white.

Too All---I created this shot because I have been reading Edith Hamilton’s Mythology and I just got to the part right before The Iliad about the Judgement of Paris. Hera Promised Paris that he would be Lord of Europe and Asia if he gave her the apple, hence “power” being the first word. Athena promised to give him to the wisdom to beat the Greeks down to ruins, hence “wisdom” as the second word. Aphrodite promised to give him the most beautiful women in the world, hence the last word, “love.” I changed the inscription on the golden apple because I thought the apple was a beautiful symbol of the choices we all must make in life. I thought it was fascinating that all choices, power, wisdom, or love, all lead to war and distress. The apples in the background are symbols of all of the other choices we must make, none as important as the golden one. I may have been reading too far into it though.

Thefooz- my understanding of psychology is meager at best, but I hope it makes more sense in context with The Judgment of Paris… if it doesn’t, please correct me!

Flo- the conflict of the shot happens when you think to yourself “would I rather be powerful, wise, or in love?” just like Paris did in the story

KarlosDaJackal- what do you mean outside? Like outside the frame? I’d like to maintain the apples in the frame so the shot doesn’t loose it’s meaning… any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as I can re-setup this shot.

By outside I meant the great outdoors, or even indoors, just not in a white box. But after hearing the explanation, it might be better as it is.

did you really spraypaint an apple gold? lol

I would wrote, "Hold your tongue and say 'apple'."

The OOF apples seem a little noisy, needs a touch more space to the right of the apple pile (I'd like to have seem the pile in it's entirety), and I would like a pinch more foreground in front of the golden apple.

I like it though, interesting concept.

cool concept - i would suggest (if you shot more like this) to bring the red apples closer to the camera to dominate that side of the frame a little more and maybe even not be quite so out of focus IMO

Overall I really like the image.

#1 I wish the writing was a little more clean and more towards the camera. You can probably do this better in photoshop than actually on the apple. Maybe a fatter sharpie would have worked too.
#2 I'm going to go completely wacky and say the crop is too tight. The gold apple is too far to the corner.

Nice idea an concept.
Compositionally, I'd prefer the golden apple bigger and closer to the other.
with regard to the tale, the golden one should be flawless.

A photo is worth a thousand words. Sometimes writing a picture can be an awe inspiring challenge.
