135L and shutter speed question....

I recently purchased a 135L and used it for the first time with studio lights. Typically I used a shorter focal length when shooting portraits and set the shutter speed anywhere between 90 and 125. Since I'm using a longer range, should I increase the shutter speed to 200 using the rule your shutter speed should be double your focal length? Does that rule apply to studio shots? This is a great lens that I'm just getting used to. When I nail the shots, they scream at you. I typcially use wider lenses and have gotten accustom to slower shutter speeds.

Generally not as your strobes are providing the exposure. As long as your reasonably comfortable holding it, stay with your lower speeds.

Your strobe sync speed will really be the determining factor.

If your studio lights are strobes the shutter speed doesn't matter, if they're continuous lights, I would keep the same (if you're using a tripod), i wouldn't want to hand hold a 135mm with no IS at 1/90

My studio lights are strobes. I don't use my 70-200L that often, so this range is a little foreign to me, especially indoors. I'm discovering I have to get my shutter speed up to get a sharp shot (duh!). I guess I've taken IS and shorter lengths for granted and am having to adjust to this lens.

You won't have any issues under strobes.

When shooting with strobes, you MUST shoot with a shutter speed at or slower than the "max sync speed" for your camera's shutter. There's no getting around that.

If you keep the ambient light down somewhat, you could shoot at very slow shutter speeds and the short duration of the light from the flash source(s) will "freeze" any motion of your camera and/or subject.

Depending on the type of studio strobe being used, shutter speed can be an issue even with strobes as I learned a year or so ago....

My 5D has problem to keep up the 1/200 sync speed some times when radio triggers are used. Just use 1/125 for everything in studio, no problem even with the 200 mm lens.
