Hello there - I'm a little confused by what you've done. According to your subject title: did you plug some sort of diffusion gizmo into the hotshoe, or an off-camera cord that is typically used with a bracket?

Also, what kind of camera are you using, and is this a matter of the onboard flash not working? Please clarify the circumstances and we'll be in a better postion to help - thanks.

OP probably bought something like the Gary Fong Puffer:

IMG NOTICE: [NOT AN IMAGE URL, NOT RENDERED INLINE]

OP: Its probably not firing the flash because whatever diffuser you slide into the hot shoe might be pressing the little switch in there which makes the camera think that there is an external flash mounted to the camera and thus it should not be firing its internal pop up flash.

It's hard to tell from the original post, but if it's cheap it could be something like the Lumiquest Soft Screen, which is mounted in the hotshoe. The Lumiquest instructions indicate that on some cameras it's necessary to trim the part that goes in the hotshoe so it doesn't press the switch that makes the camera think there's an external flash mounted. Exactly like what ben_r_ is talking about.

Ok, now that is too much information! I believe OP is Original Poster but what do I know, I'm new. Your first post seemed to say that your flash wouldn't fire, at least that is how I took it. Your second post says it won't pop up. That tells me you are shooting in program mode and I suspect the Gary Fong gadget is tricking your camera into thinking there is a flash in the hotshoe by depressin the contacts. Try switching to manual, manually pop up the flash, put on the gadget then take a shot and see if it fires.

Yea, ol' Gary strikes again!

I will say this though, the puffers are an absolute gift when used on the Canon MT-24EX Twin Light Macro Flash! They are awesome and I personally own a pair for use on mine. But as a pop up flash diffuser I really wouldnt know as I never tried them for that nor do I ever use onboard flash anyway.

Every Fong devise has a nickname.

The original - Tupperware
The newest devise - The Toilet Bowl

But what about the Puffer?.........looks like a maxi pad for your flash (insert your own joke here).
