Some great shots there Paul, well positioned and focused.

But I am sorry to say overexposed by the look of it, causing you to loose saturation. It is often a good idea to underexpose slightly as these chaps have very vibrant colours and matrix metering often overexposes.

You jpgs have the EXIF striped out, where these ambient light or flash?

They were actually using a ring flash but a cheap one, have to get a better one. Was also bright sunlight, from my holiday in Hungary, one day was even 44°C
most were f7.1
1/160
ISO 200.

Just noticed on the last one the little critter under the leaf :D

Heh, yes you often get little side stars like that saying 'hi mum!'

Unless you are using a tripod or monopod I would think 1/160 is a bit slow even with the 60mm.

Was it manual flash exposure control then, that is tough with macro as the effective aperture is changing with magnification.

If you shoot RAW you can often recover lost highlight detail that you can't with jpg, assuming it was jpg you were shooting.

I did shoot some in RAW but not all, changed from M to Auto a few times. Oh well not to worry a new flash is next on my list .

Take a look at the MT-24EX twin flash, a lot more expensive than the MR-14EX ring flash, but it allows much more control over the lighting angle as well as being able to use the flash heads off the bracket. I have some bumf on it here http://www.zen20934.zen.co.uk …uipment.htm#Macro%20Flash (external link)

Just having TTL control of the flash is a big boon for macro, I used to have to use manual flash in my long ago film days, hard work to get it right.

Like #2 & #3 the others do look a bit overexposed.
