Just wondering what everyone uses when shooting football games at night. I will be up in the stands but not to far away from the action and was wondering if I could get some tips from everyone

thanks in advance :)

Way to open ended of a question. Need details like camera gear your using, lighting of the stadium and such. The recommendations will be different based conditions.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Yep, open up to f/2.8, crank ISO to 1600 (or 3200), and pray your shutter speeds are fast enough to stop the action. (in Av mode of course....)

If they are not fast enough, you can coax another full stop by shooting ISO 6400. Just set EC-1 and in post processing push exposure +1. The image will be noisy but the 40 cleans up rather nicely with something like noise ninja.

I'm going to have to try that. :)

There's a custom function that you have to enable to allow you go to an ISO of "H" (which is essentially ISO3200) I'm pretty sure the manual tells you exactly the name of the function to enable.

Excellent advise John. You just opened my eyes. ;)

Pseudo ISO 6400, ie. Shot at ISO 1600 with the 40D in Av Mode, using an old 300/4 non-IS L, through a glass window on a dark rainy day. Exif should be intact. This should give an ISO 3200 equivelant. Then in ACR, bumping the Exposure to +1.00, export a JPG at Q=10, open that and run NeatImage, sharpened the Red Channel with USM at 50.0, 0.3, 0.0.

And for the Acid test, a 100% crop, then doing the above...

yeah, I'd say you could shoot a night game with the 40D. ;)

Sure, just set the ISO to 1600, set EC to -1, and bring up the exposure in your RAW editor of choice (ACR/DPP/etc...)
