I'd say its proprietary dependent on what system you are using, however because it is not manufactured by/does not work with just one brand, I'm not going to consider it proprietary.

Me thinks you're finding out how hard this is going to be....

Could be a useful resource though.

You might want to consider listing optical masters/slaves as a system. There are types that get messed up by Canon's pre-flash and types that don't I believe. They fill the role of controlling another flash in a similar way to the low end cactus triggers I think. And they would work about as reliably as the ST-E2 on average I would surmise (though the ST-E2 when functioning adds fantastic utility for the Canon system). The optical slaves do have their drawbacks, but they also can work just fine within their limitations. I know the optical triggers are out there, but I don't know enough about the specifics to know which ones form a complete system together. Others will know that I'm sure and I'd like to hear that info myself. I wouldn't be surprised if Curtis N sticks his head in here at some point.

I hope he does, I need to get the most information I can.

Thanks again guys.

It's alright, it needs to be done. They don't need to fit into any real category, I'll just have to explain to people how each system works.

I think they should stay on, purely so that it can be documented that they are such pieces of ****.

I have to defend my eBay triggers :) They worked for me right out of the box, have been almost 2 years, they serve me well in the studio and outdoors when Canon Masters fail. There are happy users out there by the thousands.

I'd say you're very fortunate then. I bought a V2 transmitter and three receivers. One receiver was DOA and had to be replaced. Of the three that do now work, one will only work if I remove the battery cover, as having it in place seems to break a contact which renders it inoperative. Other than that, there is the random spontaneous firing, failure to fire at all, and rather variable sync speed performance. I have replaced batteries in everything and there has been no improvement in performance. I've tried using them in a room about 13' square in a domestic environment and still they are unreliable. I have a 580EX I, a 580EX II and an old Pentax flash. I need to mate each flash with a particular receiver, otherwise the random firing is even worse.

When I bought mine I think the only other options were vastly more expensive - Pocket Wizards and well beyond my budget at the time. If they work then they offer fantastic value, but if they suck, as mine do, then they are near worthless.

I have the 16 ch version trigger sets, the receiver uses AAA battery and 1/8 mono plug, so it has less connection problems. My triggers on factory setting would randomly fire the Speedlites too, but switching to the right channel took care of that. Canon Speedlites are odd balls when using non-Canon triggers, like the optical slave, or the Skyport to trigger the manual master 580 II.

We all know the eBay trigger are low tech gadget with cheap build, and I have no problem switching to PW if they don't work. But for new hobbyists wanting to experience off camera lighting and don't want to spend a lots of money, specially when they need more than a couple of Rx, the eBay triggers are still good alternatives, IMHO.

I hear great things about the popper jrs. coming out.

Radio Popper has a Sept. 10 update on their site saying the popper jrs will come out at the same time as the p8s and those are scheduled for this fall. They say to expect some real news in a couple weeks from now.

Don't forget the Quantum Radio Slaves and the FreeXwire RF remotes.

And as far as proprietary vs non-proprietary is concerned, they're all proprietary because almost none of the remotes that are listed will work with any other remote from other manufacturers except for the Canon and the Nikon ones (which makes it kind of ironic that they're listed as proprietary, eh? ;) :D )
