Hi, new question. I only do photography part-time or less. I would like to do it more, just has not happened yet. Anyway, I want to try and make a logo with CS3, I am not that talented yet. I was wondering if someone could give me some pointers? Ex: My size should I set for it, How to save it for different formats. And also, I have a website and wanted to (Try) to make a banner, what size should that be done at. And is there any brushes that you could recommend to help design? I know its alot, but thought I would try. I have someone working on one, but so far only 1 design and I did not really like it.

Thanks,

Teeny

In most cases, Photoshop isn't the best program for creating logos (unless it is an image-based logo), but it's certainly capable.

It's hard to give advice without knowing what you've got in mind, but two things spring to mind:

1) You'll almost certainly need to use the vector tools (eg Pen Tool), so you'll need to familiarise yourself with them; and

2) Make sure you set it up at a bigger size than you think you'll ever need. It's not such a silly idea to make it A4 size at 300ppi. Once it's made and saved, you can then make smaller versions as needed for business cards, website banner, etc.

As long as your web logo isn't going to be printed (and perhaps even if it is to be printed), Photoshop will do fine.

I built the logo on my website (link in sig) with PS. I don't offer it as an example of great design, but I think the display quality as good as it gets for web use.

Thanks everyone for the advice. By the way, Peano I really liked yours on your site. I love that star effect. I have been online checking out the links Swift posted. Everytime, I would try one either something was missing that it called for or it just turned out wrong. I will post one. Not what is was suppose to look like. Anyway, I'll try some more tomorrow.

Teeny:)

Hi teeny, I'm not sure how you made the swirl in the first logo, but look for an "anti-alias" setting when you do it. That will smooth those curves nicely.

For the top one: I'd use the pen tool. (vectors instead of pixels).
Also makes it easy to use Dr. Brown's (external link) "Digital Watermark Branding" ;)

(scroll down to the CS2 section and watch the QT movie ;) He uses illustrator, but PS will do it as well)

if you aren't going to make your logo in a vector application ie. Freehand/Illustrator/CorelDraw

make sure you work at an extreme resolution say around 5000 pixels wide, then when you shrink it to print on your business cards/letterheads etc the logo will have more clarity than if you were to use your examples above..
