I have seen countless guesses and theories about Canon's lineup for 2008/2009 and heard even more threats about people jumping ship if Canon do not give the public what they want and blah blah blah.

NOW, my interest is in what you guys would do if Canon DO NOT deliver a 5D mkII, 3D or a 9D. Not about what will be released, just what if...?

i will stay stick with canon, because if they dont release it later this month, it must be REALLY good. plus, not releasing a new 5D still doesnt make noink better than canon...so why jump ship...

As nice as the new Nikon line-up is, I despise their menu systems and ergonomics. That said, I've spent too much on EF glass! I think I'd rather be content with what I have and begin to gradually save in preparation for the next 1-series in a few years time *crosses fingers* :D

What i would do is switch to something that starts with a NI and ends with a KON...probably by year end.

What would I do? I'd continue taking photos with my 5D, that's what I'd do. It delivers all I
need and then some.(I might even get a second body).

I'd face a horrible, gut wrenching decision:

Do I shoot with the 5D today or the 40D... :p

I too am ready to upgrade and have cash in hand. Canon of late has really misjudged its competitors and have clearly let them back into the game. Nikon has been putting out some outstanding hardware clearly significantly better than Canon's offerings. That said, I have no intentions of moving to Nikon right now. Canon still has some very nice cameras and the 50D solves one of my biggest problems so for now I'm staying put. The way I figure it by the time I sell everything, reinvest in a different brand and get settled in, Nikon will be slumping and Canon will once again be on top.

sell the 70-200is L and move on to the dark side even if their buttons are in the wrong place. I 'll adapt.

I am already considering trying the D300 because it offers what I have been waiting for Canon to offer and still doesn't in the 50D:

  • Better feeling grip
  • Wireless Flash in body
  • Weather sealing

However, I too, think that once I try Nikon, Canon is going to get back into the game (they've been hit with the Nikon bat and then one with spikes too many times). I also like Canon's lens lineup better since it has more options and you can easily tell which are the pro lenses.

Canon has been so stubborn on the "pro" features like weather sealing: 40D has 2 weather seals so they can say "improved weather sealing". Pentax includes it on the $1K body. They are so afraid to canibalize their own line that Nikon and other are helping them out. Also, my 30D seems to be providing more noise in my images in its "old age". Why?

So for now, if I do try Nikon, I'm hanging on to my Canon gear so I can go with which one I like best after trying both. You don't know unless you try :)

I need a camera with a good AF system that also performs well at high ISOs. If the 50D is not that camera and there are no others in the sub-$3000 range, I may have to jump ship to Nikon, as I do not want to spend over 3000 for a camera body that will depreciate the minute I buy it.

It is probably only a matter of time until something that catches my attention is released by Canon... the flipside is either Canon is going to go out of business (very unlikely), They only release pro cameras that I have no interest in due to the price and bulky size or they just continue to release these rather affordable 40/50d's when I want something a step beyond that....

To be honest I would trade/sell my Canon stuff for Nikon if it wasn't such a hassle..I used to shoot Nikon and now that the field is pretty much level again (Nikon getting the noise issue under control) I find I desire Nikon again... I prefer their aperture/shutter controls much more but I would miss Canons lenses and menu system...

If I had the money I'd like to switch regardless of what Canon does next... but don't shoot me ;)

Then I may just have to buy the 1DsMk3 - I imagine Canon will cut the price to something like $5k, given that Sony now has 24MP FF coming out.
