No wonder that pier had to be built that long: if you only have one day of summer a year all Brits and visitors will flock to it on that same day. They need space ;):)

An amazing shot, Lee. Were you on part of that pier too?

Is was Victorian invention. A pier designed for enjoyment (eating candyfloss, games of chance, fishing, picking pockets etc) , rather than commercial use (loading/unloading cargo).

When the tide is in, it gives you the opportunity to walk above the waves with an air of wonderment......or at Southport it gets you a couple of hundred yards closer to the sea (which is famously about 300 miles from the shore....).

Cool shot, I didn't realize they built such long piers! I hope "candyfloss" is what you guys call "cotton candy". ;)

Heh, that made me laugh! So true. I remember driving on Southport sands before I had a licence!!!

Great picture of quite a landmark, which is only just down the road from me. Thanks for sharing :D

I'd hate to fish off the end of that pier... who knows what you'd get... anglerfish?? All sorts of devilry, I suppose!

Hi Guys;

MANY thanks to ALL for taking the time to view & comment & apologies for the delayed responses...

YES: At the end, the pier has 90 degree turn and houses a lifeboat station with a viewing platform on top... I was on there... You can just about make out the end of the pier from shot 1 in this thread... [Same as the link below...]

NO: "Candyfloss" is the REAL name, and what you guys call "Cotton Candy" ;)
