I can't seem to find any of the threads for this...
My IS took a dump, or is starting to.
What's the goin' rate on the repair costs?
Thanks!

Exactly. This is my 2nd copy of the lens, I've had no failures myself, but as hard as I try to like it I'll never love the lens. It's a good performer but doesn't have staying power in my lineup.

You prefer 17-40 over the 17-55IS?

I see what you're saying for sure, it's easy to like and appreciate, hard to love. It probably is the BEST all around lens for a crop body, hands down. I just want a 24-70L back as it fits my kit and my shooting style better. And it's built better.

Yes I do - I have to openly admit that the 17-55 is hands down the more versatile lens with it's wider range, faster aperture, and IS. That being said, I find the images (sharpness, color, contrast) to be equal or better from the 17-40, and I find the user experience (build, field, focusing, rings) to be nicer. The proof is in the pudding - I love using the 17-40 and look for times to use it, I use the 17-55 because it fits the job at the time. Just my opinion, perhaps I value parts of the experience that others don't.

Yup, I've had my 17-40 all along, it's my favorite lens, however I needed F/2.8 for some work, so I did this:

Tamron 17-50 -> 17-55 IS -> 24-70L -> 17-55
If I were keeping a 17-xx standard zoom and needed F/2.8 in hindsight I would've stayed with the Tamron (only thing I missed here was USM and FTM). If I could keep any out of the list it would be the 24-70 F/2.8L, simply a workhorse and great in every way.

Anyways, I'm not slamming the 17-55 at all. It is a lens that gets things right in so many areas, just the sum of all the parts doesn't do it for ME.

Back to the original question - in many cases Canon has repaired the IS units for free, but I believe the cost to repair is around $100 (don't quote me) + your shipping costs.

Off topic a bit:
However I read from comments and reviews that 17-40L isn't as sharp wide open.
Below is a comparison between a kit lens and 17-40L

I paid $108 in Canada to clean my lens + fix my IS, but this lens is perfect on a crop camera. Took like 60k shots with it lol.

Not bad at all in terms of the cost for a fairly major repair, just a shame that it is a known problem with this lens.

The IS in my 17-55 died last summer. I think the cost to have it repaired was about $92 through Canon Irvine.

When I got it back it was clean, calibrated and worked perfectly.

Well worth it for a very nice lens.

However, the IS should not have failed after only 14 months of sporatic use. I had maybe 4000 shots on it. Not great for a $1000 lens.
