Does anyone know anything about it. Is it worth it? i found it for $250.

Let me know what you think please.
Thanks!

It is a wonderful lens. Quick AF, good bokeh, solid feel. I love mine.

hi Adam!:) a lot of people here, i think, have that lens including me. the 85 1.8 is an awesome lens! fast & accurate AF, excellent IQ, creamy bokeh, small, light & cheap. the only negative thing about this lens is CA in high contrast areas. i use it as my indoor sports & portrait lens.

check out this archive for some sample pics...

Would the 50mm be better to get? As i am just starting out, i am trying to figure out the basics of what i need to see what i can do with the camera. I just picked up a sigma 70-300mm lens for $90 local and figured i would use it for zoom shots, but wanted something for close ups as well. I found the 50mm for $86 on bhphoto.com.

The Nifty Fifty is the best value lens for the price you'll find. It's a cheap lens with excellent optics. You need to ask what you'll be using it for, however. 50mm is a somewhat awkward length unless you're going to be doing a lot of portrait work. It's not anywhere close to being a wide angle, and it doesn't have much length. Lots of folks love the 85mm for its extended reach and better build. It's probably a better lens than the 50 in all ways, but you're paying significantly more for it.

For the record, the 85 is on my wish list, but there are several lenses ahead of it...

I bought the 100mm Macro f/2.8 instead of this lens. Not as fast, but more versatile (considering the 1:1 macro) and I end up shooting portraits at at least f/2.5 anyway.

Not at all recommending you do what I did, just reminding you to keep your options open.

(And my 100mm is sharper at f/2.8 than most of my lenses at f/5.6, which is crazy).

The 85 is better built, better optics, better focusing. I love mine. Its also of course way more expensive than the 50 1.8. You wouldn't regret the 85, but seeing as you mentioned the 'just starting out' part I'd say you may be better off with the 50. It'll give you a taste of prime lenses but without sinking much cash in.

oh, you didnt mention that earlier. anyway, yeah, maybe you would be better off with a 50 1.8. the 85 focal lenght is not what i consider versatile. it can be too long indoors. the 50 1.8 is also kinda long for crop bodies (assuming that is what you have) but is more versatile than the 85. it has decent low-light AF speed, good IQ, very small & light, best of all, dirt cheap. those features will make you ignore its weaknesses like crappy build & rough bokeh. the 50, IMO, is a good introduction to primes for beginners.:)
