G3 Accessory Recommendations For Novice

This is my first forum posting (ever), so be gentle as I tend to be long winded…

I've been monitoring this forum for about 6 months while deciding which digital camera to purchase. The information I've read here has been excellent, and I thank everyone for their valuable input. I decided to wait (+pay more) for the G3 because although the specs are very similar to the G2, I think there will be image quality improvements that cannot be attributed to advertised specifications (maybe?). Anyway, I have read recommendations regarding UV filters to other photography newbie's on this forum, but there seems to be a large gamut of choices and prices. Some more expensive filters advertise "High Resolution", is this significant or not for a G3? Should I even be worrying about filters as a novice at this point?

Any advice regarding filters and other accessories would be most appreciated.

Thanks, Scott.

Anyone know where you can get the G3 case now? I tried the G2 case and it doesn't really work.

Canon makes a semi-hard case for the G3. B&H has it for $36.

Here is the link (cut & paste to browser):

Anyone know if it is possible to post an active link here?

Has anyone actually seen the G3 semi-hard case? Does it have any room for extra CF cards and batteries? Lens adaptor? I was looking at the Tamrac website and it looks like they might have some useful cases.

At the very least, if you're concerned about protecting the lens then get a lensmate and a UV filter. Make sure the filter is multicoated. I don't know about "High resoltuon" stuff because the lens is only as sharp as it is, you can't put something in front of it that will make it better.

Perhaps a sturdy tripod if you feel you could use one and won't hesistate the haul it around.

Ignore the Canon bags; they're only big enough to fit the G3 on its own and a few CF cards. Buy a second battery if you feel one isn't enough. Perhaps a bigger CF card.

Flash guns, monocular lenses, wideangle/telephotos, fancy filters are all specialist bits and pieces- only get them if you're actually going to use them enough to justify their purchase because none of it is cheap. Find what you photograph most often and stick to that. Good Luck,

I use the d-res 40 aw from Lowe -http://www.lowepro.com …series/dres/dres40aw.html (external link). It is the perfect size for my g3 with 58mm adapter (or without). It has places for 2 flash cards, the remote, enough space in the second (custom sizeable) compartment for ALL the power cables, av cables, a filter case, an extra battery plus there's extra space at the back of the bag where I put the original lens cover and flange and a lens cleaner. Theres even room for a small ultrapod tripod sitting on top of everything. On top of all that, the case is waterproof (except the zipper) and has a built in raincover. When I bought it, I was pleasantly surprised at the cash register that it was on sale for half off! I was ready to drop the C$40 for it but it turned out to be a steal at $20. It's worked great for me so far.

Hi
In view of the fact that you haven't purchased the camera yet and therefore reached it's standard form limitations why worry about accessories.

If you think that you will reach it's limitation then you only need to know that there is a wide range of add-ons but you can't yet know which ones you'll need.

Buy it
Play with it
Then ask!

Regards
Alan

I have this case. It is a nice case to protect the camera, but there are no pockets or pouches to carry anything. Not even a memory card. It is just protects the camera. I got a good deal on it from Amazon with free shipping.

Why do you have to have a Canon camera case? It's probably over priced, and too small. Go to a store like Best Buy and get a canvas case with wide strap and velcro closer, with ample room for the camera and your stuff. It won't crack, will pad your camera nicely, and will last for years. You can expect to pay about $20.

I have a Canon Backpack style case which is very nice, and surprisingly affordable. I got it at a small shop for $40. I'm not sure the model number, however. Mine is made for an SLR and several compartments for lenses, etc.
