Hello. i am planning to get the Canon 40D, with a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM (external link). just wondering what the best lenses are for:

1) Sports Photography
2) Portrait Photography
3) Macro Photography

im only a beginner, so im still pretty confused with a lot of things. like the difference between zoom lenses and fix lenses.

for sports i wish to shoot mostly basketball. i'll be going to my first lakers game this year sitting 7th row from the court. which lens would work best with this? i'de also like one that i could shoot concerts with. in both cases, the lighting is extremely dark.

any suggestions?

okay! thanks for any help. :)

Well...

1) For sports the 70-200 f/2.8L IS is a good start, you may want something faster or longer but try the 70-200 1st.
2) the 70-200 f/2.8L IS is a great portrait lens (for a zoom that is)
3) If you want a good macro lens, the canon 100mm f/2.8 macro is a good place to look. Or use your 70-200mm with an extension tube.

Zoom lens are lens that change FL, like the 70-200mm. That lens can go from 70mm at its widest to 200mm at its longest. A Fixed lens such as the Canon 135mm f/2L is fixed at 135mm, you will have move to make the subject fill up the frame (photo).

You may want to check the events you plan to bring your camera too. Many do not allow DSLR's.

I hope this helps!

Mike

What sports?

The 70-200 is pretty good for portraits, though a bit long on a 1.6X body.

One of the best macro lenses is the Canon EF 100/2.8 Macro. Very versatile for general macro work. Be sure to get a good tripod if you plan to shoot macro. Macro photography in general is not a handheld pursuit (with a few exceptions).

Im looking for a 300 f/4 IS, not sure whether to go that cause its nice and cheap or save ages for the 2.8, what you think?

Get the 300/4. If you find that you really need the extra stop you can usually sell for little loss, especially if you start with a used 300/4.

The 300/2.8 is a huge step up in cost, size and weight. I personally find anything that big more than I am willing to carry for most things.

I have the 300/4 and it is one of my best lenses. Mine is extremely sharp, fast to focus and works very well with the 1.4X TC provided light is reasonably good.

Huge hood? I dunno....it does have a built in hood that I love because it is very handy and stores well in the bag. The hood seems to give good coverage for a 300mm lens.

I have examples, if you want to look at full resolution images then check my flickr, especially the 8U softball section which was shot mostly at 420/5.6 (with the TC).

I actually only own one camera, so I can't take a picture of the 300/4 on the camera. How about next to some well known lenses?

You can't. It can be extended or retracted but never taken off. It's like a lens foreskin - it only comes off once.
