Hello. i am planning to get the Canon 40D, with a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM (external link). just wondering what the best lenses are for:

1) Sports Photography
2) Portrait Photography
3) Macro Photography

im only a beginner, so im still pretty confused with a lot of things. like the difference between zoom lenses and fix lenses.

for sports i wish to shoot mostly basketball. i'll be going to my first lakers game this year sitting 7th row from the court. which lens would work best with this? i'de also like one that i could shoot concerts with. in both cases, the lighting is extremely dark.

any suggestions?

okay! thanks for any help. :)

my choices
1) 70-200 f/2.8L (IS or non)...though I should mention that this lens will get you in trouble with officials if you don't have a press pass (depends on their rules of course). i was told to put mine away because it was longer than their regulations allowed. you might want to check if you'll be able to use the lens that you want to get at the games you frequent

2) 70-200 f/2.8L IS. I say IS because it'll help indoors, and IS will help you compose more accurately at the longer focal lengths (around 200mm). Cheaper alternative? 85mm f/1.8 (a fixed focal length lens, aka prime lens)

3) nothing beats a dedicated macro...so 60mm f/2.8 or 100mm f/2.8 macro lenses are both good choices. Note that you can only use the 60mm one on crop bodies like the 40D. If you plan to get a full frame camera in the future, the 100mm f/2.8 is a better idea (EF lenses work on crop and full frame, EF-S lenses ONLY work on crop bodies). If you want a cheaper alternative, you can get some extension tubes (not to be confused with teleconverters) to stick between your camera and already existing lenses. This will allow you to put the camera closer to your object than normally allowed by that lens, making your subject larger.

Wait, so you don't want the 300/4 IS because you don't like the hood?
They had some very good points......The 300/2.8IS is HUGE (to me anyways) Although it is the best glass I've shot, it's not much good if you don't feel like lugging it around.
The 300/4 IS is a fantastic lens and a good start to see if the FL works for you

yeah i've shot with my friends 2.8 300mm and i absolutely love it, i love the fact that it is HUGE and heavy, more stable to shoot with, and id rather save the extra and go the 2.8, then have it forever...

You like bigger and heavier?

I'd shoot everything with a Canon G9 if it wasn't so hugely limited in what it can do vs. what I want to do. There are essentially zero situations where big and heavy are advantageous on their own merits.

You'll want a flash, or a fast prime + flash for extremely dark. The f/2.8 isn't going to do well in darkness with moving objects.

At 16 years old, perhaps a cool hood and big heavy white glass might be "advantageous" Jeffery......CaseyJohn, I'm not knocking you, I think after seeing your "16yr old photographer" sig, it gave me a better idea of where you might be comming from. Priorities are certainly different for everyone and the 300/2.8IS is a seriously bad a$$ lens....If you got the snap, get it.

yer, well currently working as a photographer for some companys and doing photoshoots here and there and working at woolworths, normally around 10-20 hours a week and holidays ill probs be doing around 38 hours..

id prefer to just save up the extra and get the 2.8 that way i have it
rather then what i did with 70 200 i got the f/4 IS, sold it a week later and got the 2.8!

Im looking for a 300 f/4 IS, not sure whether to go that cause its nice and cheap or save ages for the 2.8, what you think?

i think you just threadjacked the poor OP. this thread is way off topic

Disagree x 100
I prefer a heavy peice of equipment as its solid and easier to pan with.
