not mad, just trying to get it back on track. i enjoyed the 300/4 pics myself, as i am considering one...but i'm not sure if the OP is

yer i think the 300 f/4 pics are extremely good esp for the price of the f/4 but i think it would be worth waiting it out getting the 2.8 imo.

1) For basketball, 7th row....Maybe the 100/2 or 85/1.8
2) Portrait Photography, the best would be the 85L, then maybe the 85/1.8
3) Macro Photography, don't shoot it often but I had the 60/2.8 and it was a brilliant little lens.

All this talk about the 300/4 and the 70-200's wont help the OP out with Concerts and basketball games with no flash...OP, you want FAST glass. Heck for about $600 you could get the 60mm for your macro AND the 85/1.8 for portraits, concerts and basketball.

Welcome to POTN, let us know what you got and show us how it worked out and ask us how to make them better. Some of the guys and Gals on this forum are amazing photographers and have helped me out time and time again....Oh, and use the search function on the top right of every page, it helps a lot.

I have been to a few lakers games. They will not allow you to bring a dslr, and they will certainly not allow you to bring a a 70-200 2.8 IS lens. that thing is a monster.
now you may get away with a 200 2.8 prime, but not likely. There is plenty of light at the staples center to shoot at 2.8, iso 1600 and 1/200 of second.
generally speaking though, for indoors sports you need something faster, which will be canon 85 1.8
