hey guys,

please help on this... i have noticed this a few times now whilst doing evening events e.g. wedding reception, and normal club stuff... unless im shooting with flash direct. However im when i shoot landscape portraits with my 580EX pointed directly up, the lighting is good and even, but when i do portrait and same again directly bouncing up, the images come out dark. I really dont understand why this is. And no its no the recharge times before someone states :P

my mate mentioned it could possibly be the fact that my hood is on, granted, tried it without on my 24-70, and its the same.

i dont use any diffusers of any sort, so trying desperately to find ones that do work in this sort of situation

Are you in ETTL or manual?

Troubleshooting 101 (see also: LightRules,perryge):
1) RTFM.
2) Repeat Step 1.

I bet your flash is not tight and you are losing connectivity with the flash on it's side.

always shoot in ETTL

this thread, in the first two examples, its exactly like that https://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?t=504313 in vertical mode...

though even still, not real solution on why it does that with dark skinned/clothes too
