I just ordered one of these from REI. Hopefully, I'll be able to test it out with my GM5540 at this weeks HS football game. http://www.rei.com/product/619457 (external link)

Let me know how that works out. I have had mag light holders like that as well, seems you could use one of those too.

I thought of that but I'm not sure they are wide enough for my monopod. I need at least a 2.5" diameter opening. Maybe one of the holders for the larger mag lights might work. I'll check it out if the Black Diamond doesn't.

Thats the kind I was talking about. I should have clarified. Mine wouldn't fit in the little one either.:D

it doesn't dig into your shoulder after a while? I know they have padding but they are still quite narrow, and with a 40D + 100-400 for a counterweight..

also, just how secure are QR plates? I guess its the 'R' bit thats concerning :) will they stay locked enough to stop the camera coming off while you're hiking around with it on your shoulder?

I've never had one come off a monopod or tripod ever...

1) Make sure the head locks are tight
2) Make sure the anti-release pin is up
3) Make sure the lens is pointing more down than up*
4) Walk

(*Near miss by an overflying seagull made me realize you don't want to be walking around with your lens pointing straight up...)

Depends on the brand I guess.
I never dared to carry the monopod over the shoulder with camera attached for a longer time when I was using a Manfrotto RC2 QR.
The QR can R pretty Q ;)

No fears with Arca style QRs.
