I know this doesn't affect the ability of the camera. The powershot G6 is a great point and shoot camera. But why on earth did Canon go with a silver body color instead of staying with black like with the G5? Thanks for listening.

Because the G5 actually was the exception to the G series with its black body (apart from the 'special edition' black G2 at the end of its life).

Also, they made enough changes from the G5 to the G6 that it is easily recognizable that you have a nice new camera.

As the only change from the G3 to the G5 was the sensor, there had to be some kind of way for G5 owners to immediately display they have the latest and greatest

Just kidding, of course. ;)

Best regards,
Andy

That's a scary, but good point, Bruce. I'd almost rather not know what the marketers are thinking...

I certainly don't want to re-open the whole silver vs black (let alone white canon lens) thing, but I'm curious about how cyclical color style is, and I don't have the background to know: Weren't high-end cameras silver at some point last century? Or was color just less uniform?

Canonshooter,

I think a lot of g users would argue the fact that the canon g - series is not merely a point and shoot type camera.

Despite their being an auto setting, when you combine the EOS incorporated features, descreet yet highly usable manual and priority modes, sophisticated metering systems, external flash / group flash and flash exposure lock capabilities, ETTL compatibility, noise control, raw file abilities, you are left with one conclusion. the g series camera, - is primarily based at the prosumer and as such is a light weight convenient slr replacement for many professional photographers (who are looking for less lens for minimal photo quality loss).

Most board membes would also argue that the g6 is more than just your average P-A-S. In fact id bet you many newbies would be hard pressed to get any quality shots in anything but auto mode on any of the g series cameras, it took me several days and lots of reading, trial and error before i even got my head around any of the intimate control capabilities of the camera range features. Im into 15,000 shots and i still find myself learning about professional photographer techniques that can be used on the G6.

PAS my #@$%@#$

Why didn't they make it brown like the Kodak Brownie of 1930? Then it would be a collectors item. My G3 is silver, and I think it looks great. But if it was black, I'd think it would look great.

Don't freak on the PAS. I classify everything that can't have interchangeable lenses under the PAS category. And this isn't to say the G-series is a bad camera for the Professional, I have actually seen a Pro who shoots mostly with 20D & L lenses....who still prefers shooting Macro with her G3 and produces some amazing shots.

I like my silver G3. It looks nice. Not flashy. Would not attract a thief. I have a lensmate adapter, and people think I am shooter an old film SLR sometimes. :D

So as the G5 + lensmate adapter... looks like a rangefinder. :D

Point a DSLR or black camera at strangers and they think you're a pro and either shy away or want money. Point a small silver camera at them and they think you're some touristy fool who's producing 3R prints for your home scrapbook. Little do they know... you own a stealth camera.

If all SLR's (film and digital) were silver, the black G6 would look right in its place.............I've heard this black vs. silver argument a milion times and it's like flogging a dead horse.

I'm still curious about the history of black finish = pro gear. From a brief search of model histories, it appears that until the early 90's, SLRs were chrome finish with some black leatherette wrapping on the body. Was that the beginning of the Darth Vader style, or are there earlier black on black incarnations?

Plus, in 20 years, it'd be a collectors item, just like the pastel-colored Lionel train set from the 50's.
