Duto or Diffusion Filter?

G'day!

I have decided that capturing people in special moments and portraiture is what I'm most interested in.

I haven't got Photoshop yet and was wanting to try out filters for a different / softer look in some instances.

Has anyone got any examples and/or suggestions on whether I would be better getting a Duto or Diffusion filter to start playing with different effects in portraiture?

Cheers!

Benno.

gday!

the duto idea (fine concentric circles on the filter) is copied from earlier Zeiss/Hasselblad 'Softar' lenses that produce a nice halo effect round highlights, without making the image too blurry. It was popular for Hollywood glamour portraits. It's a much nice effect than overall diffusion, which can be like looking through fog.

You can experiment with more control by smearing a bit of grease (from the side of the nose is a good source!) onto a UV filter. That way you can soften parts of the image and leave parts sharp.

Thanks for the informative response.
I don't really like the results from the 'soft' filters and think I'll try the Duso for the effect I'm after.
Cheers!
