Hi All,

I need your help..
I currently have a Canon 400D, sigma 70-300 and planning to go for Sigma 50-500. I am very confused on the tripod that I should go for :(
Could you guys please help me find a decent tripod that can handle this weight??

My budget is somewhere around 20000 INR, which comes down to $450 per the current conversion rates. I have friends in US who can get the setup for me..

Please let me know..

Thanks

Avi

also , forgot to mention that my height is 186 cm and would like to have a tripod that can go little above it so that I do not get pain in my neck for bird photography :)

Hello Avi

I am 178 cm tall and the process I used to measure and then buy my tripod went this way:

My Full Height: 178 cm
The Measured Height from the floor to my eye: 165 cm
Height of 40D with grip, measured from the grip base to the eyepiece: 13 cm
Calculated Minimum Height of Tripod and Ball head with QR Assembly (165cm-13cm=152cm).

Based on that information, I bought a Giottos MT-7371 tripod leg set and a Giottos MH-3300 ball head with MH-658 Quick release from Adorama. The tripod legs cost $319.95 and the ball head $179.95, for a total of $499.90.

I do not have to extend the centre column of this combination at all to reach a height of 170 cm to the base of the Quick release Assembly, which puts the 40D eyepiece 183 cm above the floor. I believe extending the centre column essentially changes any tripod to monopod, and thus comprimises stability, which after all, is why a tripod is used.

Assuming the same proportions for you (186 cm total height, so distance from floor to eye about 173 cm), the MT-7371/MH-3300 combination would be more than enough for you, and you, like I, would not have to fully extend the thinnest of the three leg sections to reach the height you need to stand without bending while using it.

The combination has a manufacturer's stated capacity of 22 lbs, a mass of 7.7 lbs, and folds to 75 cm with the head removed. I can confirm that it is rock steady with my heaviest load (40D, 70 mm-300 mm f/4-f/5.6 IS, and 580 EX flash). It appears to made very well and is also very versatile. The lava tubed construction of the legs appears very strong. I can lean on the tripod and it does not flex.
