Hey everyone :)
I know I am a newbie here, although I am lurking here for a while now and enjoy all your photos and messages :) I came out of lurkdom because I really like this mini-challenge idea you have and I look forward to see how it is going. Yep, I have a G3 and I love it :)
I am submitting on another challenge-site from the beginning and let me tell you that at first it was really hard to agree on the allowed post-processing methods there, too. Really hard to draw a line between "little correction" and "digital illustration". So we decided to allow every modification that has an influence on the whole photograph. As:
-all modification inside the camera is allowed of course
-resizing, cropping, rotating, levels, colour balance, brightness/contrast, selective colour adjustments, B&W and sepia conversions, hue/saturation,... etc. EXCEPT colour replacement
-The use of filters is not allowed, EXCEPT: blur, sharpen, noise and the noise reduction filters; despeckle and dust & scratches which are legal

I know that maybe it sounds a bit difficult but trust me, if averyone keeps in mind that no spot -editing, just modify the whole pic, it works really good.
Sorry for babbling so much, just wanted to drop my two cents on this.
Chili

Why not let the Pro1 people participate as well?
The camera is in the same family as the G-series.

We began this discussion two weeks ago and the input on this particular thread is pretty sparse, which tells me that most people are just waiting around for some guidelines and the first challenge.

I didn't start this thread, nor do I want to take it over, but I suggest we get moving if we're going to do this at all, so here are my ideas for rules...
_______________

Canon G-Series Forum Photographic Challenges – Rules

Photo Submissions

1. Camera -- photos must be taken with a Canon G-Series Camera (G1,G2,G3,G5,G6) or Pro 1.

2. Time -- any on-topic photo taken at any time is eligible, although photos that have won other competitions should NOT be entered.

3. Size -- photo must be EXACTLY 640 pixels on the longest side -- smaller/larger photos are ineligible.

4. Borders -- NO.

5. Posting (Required):

* ONE PHOTO per photographer in each challenge.
* Name your photo in the message subject line.
* Camera model.

6. Posting (Optional):

* Additional EXIF data (aperture, shutter speed, ISO).
* Tips or secrets on how the shot was taken.

7. No Commenting -- No comments in Topic thread. Comments can be made in the Winners thread when they are announced.

Hosting

1. The challenge host is the winner of the last challenge.

2. Choose a topic and list any special rules.

3. Do not post an example photo -- let people interpret the topic based on your rules and their imaginations.

4. Post the topic in a thread with this title: “G-Series Photo Challenge #X - Topic.”

5. At the end of competition, choose a Winner and two Runners-up and explain why the photos were selected.

6. Announce these in a thread titled “G-Series Photo Challenge #X - Winners.”

7. Winner starts with Rule #1 above.

Time

One challenge every two weeks, on the following schedule:

  • New Topic ... Tuesday
  • Posting ... Wednesday - Sunday midnight GMT (12 days later)*
  • Winner Announcement ... Monday
*Posting can begin as soon as New Topic is announced, i.e. Tuesday. This gives us two weekends for new shoots, although posting a past shot is allowed.

_______________

Unless there is a strenuous objection from a large mass of people, I think these rules are sufficient for at least the first challenge.

Bauerman ... tomorrow's Tuesday ... what's our Challenge? :D

Cheers,

Don

Why no comments....I would prefer to comment on 'live' pictures
rather than go back to a previous competition...also any comments could be an aid to the host in their judging

If there is a sound technical reason that i've missed for not
including comments ......i'll apologise now and you can all ignore
me!

Sounds great--we can always iron out any issues as they come up.

Rich, a couple of the issues raised about comments were that they tend to bloat the thread and make it hard to navigate, and they tend to be non-constructive ("Nice shot" etc.). I think the other idea floating around was that this is a challenge more than a critique forum (which already exists here). I certainly don't feel strongly about it, but I can see how it'd be more lean, and easier to manage without the comments.

New Year, New Challenge

Ok, I lied (I’m in advertising)... I AM taking this over.

Today is the last day of the Chinese Lunar New Year -- Happy Year of the Rooster. Tomorrow is a New Year , so let's try something new.

Even though I offered some rules, thoughts and explanations, the thought that kept going through my mind was BOOOOORING.

This was shaping up to be just another photo challenge, except for G-series cameras. So what? (And the low level of response these past two weeks would seem to bear this out.)

But overnight I found a solution (for me, anyway). So I’m changing the Title and the Time and one of the Rules.

Title: POTN G-Series Speed Challenge

Time: Weekly

Rule:
Host can post one of his or her own photos (got to be some reward for winning as opposed to the onerous task of choosing the next winner).

Reasoning

Any successful product needs a USP – a Unique Selling Point. Ours will be speed.

G-camera owners get the shots because they have their cameras with them – they don’t have to hike back to the truck or dig around in the bottom of their closet or go down to the studio. They see a shot, they take a shot.

At every two weeks, if you post ONE PHOTO on the first day, you then have to wait around for 13 days for the next challenge. Did I say boring? In this challenge, you post and within a week you know and you move on. Don’t like this week’s challenge (“Roadkill”, for example), just wait a week. Plus the timing gives you the entire weekend for new shots.

We're supposed to be enthusiasts, so let's be enthusiastic.

Final Thought

We put all the winners in a single thread (at least until it gets too big, i.e. quarterly, semi-annually). Saves jumping around trying find the latest or previous winners.

I’d love to ask for responses* on this but since I’m going to do it anyway, here’s the first speed challenge --
https://photography-on-the.net …d.php?p=405720#post405720

Good luck.

Don

* If people don’t like this challenge it will wither and die and that will be a response, eh? However, the rules can still be discussed and modified for future challenges, so if you have an opinion, please express it.

Since I'm headed out of town for three weeks starting next Wednesday, I'll have to pass on this (in the unlikely contingency that I win, I wouldn't be here to moderate/judge) until March. Hope others participate; this (or really, any incarnation of a competition on this forum) is too good an opportunity to let wither!
I hope to have some fabulous photos three weeks hence!
