:pI accidentally dropped my XSi Rebel last night and the lens motors stopped working, luckily the filters I had on there absorbed the impact and took the cracks instead of the actual lens glass i see no scratches on the body itself and I was curious if there is any way to run any types of tests on the body itself to make sure its not done for as well, it comes on and everything looks fine but if i attach the lens and try snapping a shot it says lens communication error and such. any help would be appreciated..

btw the kit lens is the only one i have right now

edit: the woman in the camera department offered to swap it all out for me so I put all the stuff back in the box since I was still in the bracket of my return policy, since the camera went on sale since I got it, they gave me the difference also so that was nice of them. I did tell them what happened and they did offer to exchange it. I figured this needed some clarification for all of the criticism.

I think you are going to need another lens to really conduct any proper testing to see if the camera is working as per normal.

You will need to have another lens attached to your body to run proper test. Maybe head to a local Ritz or Camera shop and see if they will let you test their lenses.

Looks like you learned to keep the camera strap around your neck or wrapped around your wrist at all times the hard way.

Once I get ahold of the 50D i'm going to make sure theres no way an accident like this happens also.. but I think i'm going to try going to a local store and snap a lens on the front and see.. any particular things i should try once i get a fresh lens on the body ?

just make sure it works. Keep the pics on your CF card and you can view them for any shutter damage.

I had the kit lens, EF-S IS 18-55 that came with the XSi, I had a circular polarizer on it also and i think that helped the fall even tho it shattered, but regardless, the lens was toast, i couldnt twist the focus maually or zoom in/out hah.. so i went to wal-mart and put all my stuff in the box, told them the lens stopped working and they tossed me another entire XSI box with lens etc, and sense the price went down 100$ since i bought mine 32 days ago before, they even gave me 100$ back!

Nope they didnt notice it, there was a tiny hairline crack on the edge of the lens where you screw filters in, and other than that you couldnt tell it was broke other than the fact you couldnt twist/turn it to focus or zoom lol, i think the filter saved the glass in the lens from shattering.. oh well, brand new now and i'm happy :-D everytime i go to the store though and i see how much bigger the 40D is compared to my XSi it makes me cry inside, can't wait to get the 40/50D

ps i guess the xsi is a little tougher than it looks!

Nothing like stealing. And we wonder why everything costs so much these days. I hate to say it but I would laugh if the person that accepted the return frequents these boards, looks at the signature I would hope you had to give for the return, and calls you out for fraud. Sorry, what you did is just not right.

I stole nothing and did nothing fraudulent. My girlfriend works there anyways so it's not a big problem. Only thing that is broken is the lens, to be more precise just the internal motors are broken, they can be fixed and resold i'm quite sure, the body and everything else was brand new in the package I returned. You were right though, it's nothing like stealing, at all. I could go on for weeks about how everything our government does is not right. So wal-mart is going to be just fine. I'd be a bit more open-eyed and open-minded if I were you. What I did is nothing compared to the things that go on in this world everyday under our noses.
