So, I just returned home from Sandy Puc's Bellies and Babies seminar in Columbia, SC. Canon was there with all their toys *drools* and I just HAD to ask: "I don't suppose you happen to have a 50D for us to play with, do you?"

And then... She reaches into a camera bag, and produces an unmarked canon camera... A Pre-production 50D, to be exact!

I got to play with it for a good 5 minutes or so, and she had some large prints on display that were shot with the 50D... I think this may turn out to be one heck of a camera!

Just had to share that with you all!

p.s. I think I'm STILL in shock from playing with a 1Ds Mk.III with a 70-200 2.8 IS slapped on it... I can now understand why people are so tempted to empty their account and buy one!!

Mmm... 1Ds are really something else to use, aren't they? I'll be interested to see what the 50D's like hands-on. You're probably one of the early few on the board to have played with one so far ;)

Yeah, I definitely felt special paying with the 50D! lol Though I was crushed when I walked back to the table later on and found it laying there in Greenbox mode at a photography seminar! :p

I only OWN an XTi, but I've used a 30D and a 40D... The LCD is GORGEOUS compared to the two... and the large prints that were on display look amazing. I'm definitely not qualified to make a "professional determination" but to my novice eyes... this looks like a very nice upgrade!

Just curious, how were the prints different than prints made with other cameras?

Just wondering... is there REALLY that much of a leap in image quality from a 400d/Xti to a 40d? And therefore from a 40d to a 50d? Or is it just ergonomics, features and the good old placebo effect at play?

I would guess mostly placebo at this point, even though its an obvious upgrade, I doubt that it merits everyone selling their perfectly good DSLR's to get it, as if it is going to magically make them in to professional photographers for National Geographic where 99% of the pictures it produces are potential award winners just because it's "got new cool features", or "looks cool" or "feels really nice" lol..

Were the prints done from the camera's Direct Print button?
If not, I don't want to know.

I live in Cola, SC and I can't believe a 50D was in the area! Very cool.

Of course...that would be silly.
However claiming that this is just a placebo effect means you are in a state of denial. Whether you need the upgrade is entirely up to your needs.

It is what it is...a better camera.
