This is very helpful! Since I'm not such a handy man...where can I buy something like this? I usually just bungee my Cactus V2 receivers to my 580EXII via a male/male sync cord so I can place my speedlite lower in my softbox.

But...here's what the first 2 posts said:

Anyone know which connection I need to not have to use the poverty wizards attached to the flash shoe of a 580EXII?

So I can rubber-band the 'wizard' to the flash head - thus making the 580EXII sit lower on the light-stand - useful for when using an umbrella.

If you mean the Cactus 4-Channel Receiver V2, it has a PC-Synch port, as does the 580EXII, so a PC to PC short cable will be required if the hotshoe is not used. No cable is supplied, AFAIK.

But that would be about the worst place you could find to mount the receiver - it will get massive interference from the flash. The usual technique is to move it to at least 18"/50cm from the flash.

Is it really that bad?

I think the answer is "It can be!". There are many forum discussions on this. A good number say they have had no problem. As if to say "I have not been hit by a bus, so no-one else has been either".

I use the 16-channel units and have had no problems, but an inspection of the electronics show poor soldering which is likely to tune in interference, and in time crystalise so badly as to produce an insulated layer. This leaves the wiring held mechanically, but not functioning electrically - a dry joint.

The receiver antenna is a prime candidate, and people have reported being able to reheat the joint and get better/worse reception.

Due to the "natural cussedness of inanimate objects", the joint will fail at an embarrassing time. If that matters to you, then keep the receivers away from known high-emf sources such as a shoe flash, and have a second trigger set available. Spare batteries, spare connectors, spare transmitter and receiver units...

AAMOI, Ken, what softbox do you use?

I tried retiring, but gave it up - it's a dead end

I just bought a Wescott 28" apollo softbox. Hmm...then I guess it might not hurt getting a longer sync cord and bungeeing the reciever somewhere else on the stand.
