I'm having a hard time deciding if I want to pay $60/mo for internet connection for my laptop. It seems all the major players are charging the same.

So, I guess my question is for you guys/gals that use your laptop to connect to the internet when you are out in the field (ballpark). Do you get the download/upload speeds similar to high speed internet for the home PC such as Comcast or AT&T?

Which USB card/service do you use? I don't have a PCMCIA slot or xpress card slot, so it has to be USB or nothing.

I wanted to have one on my display table to show my Smugmug galleries while at the ball fields during tournaments, but I'm not sure it's worth $720/yr.

Thanks
Still undecided
Mike

I have Alltel cell service. The offer a "broadband" card for the high prices you posted, but they also offer internet through your cell phone for much cheaper ($20/month).

I hook my Motorola Razr to my laptop via a usb cable and use it like a regular dial up connection. My speeds range about 400-600K depending on signal strength.

The negatives are that I can't make or recieve calls as it interrupts service. But, I don't use it that much and for $20/month it is a sacrifice I will make.

Also, the $20/ month is for unlimited use.

For this service you have to have cell phone service through them though, while with their cards you don't.

Wow, finally something that we get cheaper in the UK. I pay £15 (about $26 ATM) per month for 3.6Mb HSDPA.

Sorry it doesn't help you but this has to be the only thing that's cheaper here.

Mike, I use the Verizon broadband, I find it to be a little bit faster then the ATT 3G. One of the things alot of these providers are doing these days is limiting the amount of bandwidth one gets, a data plan the states unlimited is not so unlimited these days. And if you go over the cost is outrageous.

Any other thoughts - AT&T, Verizon, Sprint?

I use the only service connection here in UAE "Itesalat", 2gb, $95, very cheap, huh?
This is the maximum speed for now and the price was over $95 by doubles but then they reduced it to $95, and still the speed is not that much good enough, and many times disconnected and bad service to fix it, so how lucky we are you think people?

I currently support around 100 Sprint Broadband cards, and before that I was supporting 60 Verizon cards. Both have companies 3g cards haev decent speed, IF you can find a decent 3g signal. They both work fine in downtown Nashville, but when you get to the suburbs the Verizon cards seem to give better service North of town, and the Sprint, South of town. when riding in the car at interstate speeds I can tell you the Sprint cards are better for surfing b/c they seem to switch between broadband towers more quickly, but I believe this has more to do with the actual cards we chose rather than what network they are attached to.
