I'm looking for a good, ideally fast, ultrawide for the 1D MK3.

Is anybody out there using the Tokina 12-24 F4 lens with a 1.3x crop?
I'm curious what range is usuable.

Also, anybody using any other type of ultra wide, feel free to chime in :)

The Sigma 12-24 will work from 12mm on a 1d3... it'll also work from 12mm on a FF camera if that's what you're looking for!

I believe the Tokina is intended for 1.5/1.6 aps sized cameras. If so, there would be some pretty serious vignetting on the 1Dm3.

i agree with Jim G that the Sigma 12-24 is the better choice. it works great on all cameras and it really is a nice lens. i doubt you will even miss that extra speed that you get with the Tokina to be honest.

I put the Tokina on my 1D when I first got the camera "just to see". I promptly sold the Tokina to get the Sigma, which is actually useful. The Tokina doesn't even become remotely usable until about 16-17mm. If that's good enough for your uses, you may as well get a 17-40L instead.

So far, the only crop lens I know of being useful on 1.3x is the Sigma 30mm. You can do a little bit of vignette correction to get the borders back from about f/1.4 to I think f/4, but stopped down further they're unusable and not fully correctable.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

Good to hear. I only hope I can get a good copy. :)

Very good point and something I've considered.

Hey, cool, how much did that combo set you back?

I use the Canon 10-22 and the Tokina 11-16 on the 1D mark III, and it works beautifully. The canon will let you shoot from around 13mm and up and the tokina lets you shoot around 12.5mm and up.
The tokina is awesome as an indoor lens. It constant 2.8 aperture allows you to get a small DOF which is unique when using an ultrawide.
Here's a full 10MP sized sample of the 1D3/11-16 combo with only basic colour correction and no sharpening... hand held at a slowish shutter speed:

I'm an ultrawide whore... I use it more often than people say should be allowed. Tried out the Sigma 12-24 but damn, it's big, it's heavy, and it uses proprietary filters. It's also slow and doesn't work so well as an indoor lens. That may be a non-issue for you, but it was an issue for me.

Can you use the Tokina as is without any modification?
What happens if you use it at 11mm besides vignetting?
Does it touch the the mirror?

The tokina has no interference issues. You can use it at full wide 11mm and it won't touch the mirror on ANY EOS camera. When I use the canon 10-22 I have to be a little careful because that one DOES touch the mirror below 12mm.

Remove the baffle and replaced it with the baffle from the 75-300 for a clean OEM look.

This is good stuff as I await delivery of a new 1Dmk3 (1.3 crop), i was in a quandary about the 17-40L or the 16-35L for a wide angle zoom, I already have a Tokina 12-24 that I currently use with on my 40D. I'll give it a try at least, my only concern was with the mirror hitting the lens. Here's hoping someone will make a 12-24 f2.8 for a 1D in the future (for the price of a 17-40L of course)

Tools: Canon 5DmkII, Sony a6400, Fujifilm X100V
