I sold all my lenses in the last couple of weeks, it was nothing special and they were a collection of 3rd party lens, kit lens and a nifty 1.8. I am starting to do some wedding photography for friends and people i know so i thought i might as well use better gear.

So far I know I am getting a 24-70 2.8 L and in the future a 70-200 2.8 IS. Those 2 are certain, but i am also thinking of a few primes in between.

I got a 30D at the moment, and i figure i will upgrade to Full Frame (new 5D) some time down the line, so what lens would you suggest?

Canon 24mm 2.8
Canon 35mm 2.0
Canon 50mm 1.4
Canon 85mm 1.8

Cheers !

I don't see the point of the 24mm f/2.8 when the 24-70 can give you that. Any differences in sharpness won't matter for print or the web, and both lenses are wide open at f/2.8...it's not as though the prime has the "stopped down for better sharpness" benefit. I'd skip that one altogether.

35mm f/2 only gives you a stop over your 24-70. Focus is buzzy anyway and could be regarded as disturbing. Bokeh is also crap, IMHO.

Since you mention you will get a 24-70, and I assume it is the L-version, I would not consider the 24 F/2.8 or 35 F/2. 50 F/1.4 and/or 85 F/1.8 would be my choices, although I would first go for the 85 F/1.8, and only later the 50 F/1.4, as that FL is covered alrready by the 24-70.

Kind regards, Wim

Once again the false premise of primes being better in optical quality than zooms.
Primes are no longer better than the good new zooms, check the reviews and the MTF sheets for more information and make your own decisions. If you have the 24-70 2.8 then the 24mm prime and the 35mm prime are useless.

I'd say the 85/1.8, just in case you find yourelf in a gym shooting indoor sports.

Since you're buying L zooms, every consider going wider with a 16-35/2.8 II?

Too much stuff, not enough shooting time.

Yeah you never can tell when the bride & groom will break off the first dance and pick up a game of 1 on 1 or H-O-R-S-E.

I'll put it this way: you need to work on your follow-through.

Thank guys, after reading a bit more i think i am going to get the 85mm 1.8.

Reasons being that since i plan to go FF, the portrait ability of the 50mm on crop will be lost where the 85mm is going to be fine on FF. Also if i want the 50mm, i can always go cheap and get the F/1.8 any day. Where i can't with a 85mm, not to mention 85mm is not a length that is going to be covered on the 24-70mm.

But please tell me if my logic is flawed :D

I would agree with the 85 1.8 if the 851.2L is out of the question. The 24-70/70-200 2.8 combo is a killer for weddings. One thing is do not sell or trade your 30D, you need two bodies. Get the 5D and use the 30D as a second . You'll be well on your way with this kit.
