I used to have a nikon D70s and really loved it, but sold it and now I want to get back into photography again, not pro, but serious amateur, etc - I do mainly landscape work is my favorite, photographing mountains, etc at sunrise/sunset

I have never owned a Canon but would like to get one, however I am thinking about the Nikon D60 - why should I get the canon?

it depends on personal preference I like the canon setting layout better. I like the lens better.

Between those two, I would go with the XSI for the Canon CMOS sensor. The least expensive Nikon with a CMOS is the new D90.

Best to try both out in the store though, as ergonomics may sway you one way or the other.

Also consider a used/new Canon 30D which should be in your price range and imo, is superior to both the XSi and D60...lacks some of the latest and greatest features though. Canon 40D prices should also be dropping with the new 50D announced.

Oh and welcome to POTN!

Comparing the XSI price with the 40D I would recommend you to get a 40D if you can.

If you're not invested in a brand, go to your local camera shop, hold them, fiddle with the buttons and wheels... which one feels most comfortable in your hands?

The more natural a tool feels in your hand the less you'll concern yourself with it when you're actually using it.

40D prices are dropping. Now wouldn't be a bad time to buy one as mentioned.

The price of the XSi has come down low enough to warrant a decent price. If you're looking at Nikon vs Canon, the D90 would be the only one I would consider as an entry level simply for the CMOS sensor. It has a lot of other nice perks, but the price might be out of your range. Just to let you know, when you invest in a camera, focus more on what lenses you have for options rather than the camera itself. Both Nikon and Canon have great lenses, but Canon has a broader range IMO, especially when looking at primes in all ranges.

I had the Nikon D60, then sold it for the XSi. The XSi has many more features, the color is so much more natural and I think there are more lenses (especially used) to choose from.

Get a 30D or a 40D, don't waste your time with Rebels.

Personally, I'm not going to play this game. Never works out for the best. Go to review sites and read comparisons, then go to a store and takes pics with both, then take them home and compare.

This is a Canon forum the recommendation will be obvious.

I second that, read the reviews the XSI is an excellent camera, the 30D & 40D are also excellent, I don't know what the point is in saying don't bother with rebels when it's 1 of the cameras the OP is asking about
