The majority of my shots are sports related. Wondering what the forums thoughts be on 50D vs. a full frame camera. I've talked to several professionals and they have steered me clear of the 5D, with the rumors around 7D I'm wondering what people would be considering?

I'm currently using XTi with 70-200L 2.8 but the speed and focus capabilites are lagging behind.

Thoughts?

it all depends on what the af system and fps are of the new "7d"...ai servo is pretty important for sports photography...i have a 40d and a 1dmkIII and its night and day difference...

Nobody knows about the 50D or the '7D' so how do you expect an answer?

Buy a used 1D MkII.

Assuming you're going to stay out of the 1 series, get a 50D when it's available. I think it is reasonable to expect its AF to outperform any FF prosumer offerings.

If you are shooting sports...once you go 1 series ( Mark 2 or 2N...or 3......) you will never go back to consumer/prosumer cameras!

The issue with FF and sports is the lens part of the equation.
I would say go with the xxD series if you can't afford the 1 series.

From my limited experience with my 1DMKIII and sports, I find that the fps speed isn't as crucial as you would imagine...though it's always nice to have 10fps.;)

We have yet to see how good the AF is on the 50D.

Is this even a question, the 50D.

Having bought the 5D, I quickly realised it wasn't a match for my old 1D MKI when it came to maintaining focus on moving items. I then had to buy a 1D MKII (N Version)where the continuous frame rate is awesome and the predictive tracking of moving objects is also very impressive. The 5D - with its noticeably slower frame rate - is now for sale. Its an excellent body for landscapes, portraits and macros and fixed objects. Its doesn't work well with heavy 400mm telephoto lenses and moving items. I should add that full-frame bodies such as the 5D really do perform best when coupled with the best lenses, so be prepared to spend on L types.

All my own opinion of course, and respect to those users on this forum who have had different experiences.

Thanks for the responses. I've looked at the spec's on the 50D, used a 40D but not a 5D nor I'm I in the market for the 1D Mark III. I simply wanted some opinions as to the 40D/50D to the current 5D or with the rumors does it make sense to hold off until the next new 5D/7D? arrives before buying?

Just looking for some guidance. Thanks again

If canon are aiming at putting the replacement 5D up against a D700, and matches it focusing etc, there is a good chance that it will be a good sports camera, as for the current 5D, there is a noticeable difference in the speed of focusing I believe to the 40D and 50D, so you would be better off with a 50D. (assuming it matches up to its new spec)

It could bee, that by the time the 50 D is available in the USA, that the successor of the 5d will have been announced (or not) and you can check it out. As a current owner of the 40D, I can say it "ain't too bad". Best lower cost body I have used and is quite useful for sports.

I have no clue what the 7D has, so between 50D and 5D, I'd prob go with 50D.
