I recently used my Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS for a sweet 16 I was hired to do and I was working with low light so I turned on the IS.

About 2 hours into it the IS starts jerking around quite violently like it was stuck or something. he picture in the viewfinder would vibrate, blurring the picture and that prevented a couple of would-be shots from happening.

It happened most midway zoom and even more when I held the camera in portrait orientation....

Unfortunately it's over a year old and no longer has a warranty. I'm just mad cause it's not even that old.

I'll see if it happens again and send it to Canon....I hope its not expensive to fix. Just wondering if someone had a similar case with this lens.

This lens' IS unit has a little bit of a reputation (at least locally) for breaking early... I know a couple of photographers who only ever turn it on when they know they're going to use it. Could be bad luck or it could be an issue... it's always hard to tell with the internet.

I remember reading fixing the IS was around $100-$130...I could be wrong.

Exactly what happens when this IS unit goes out. You need to send it in and let them know your dismay for a $1000 lens. They might do it for free. Might...

mine broke a few days ago too, so I'm in the same situation. I got a quote for around $220 to fix it. Of course, I'm overseas....
