hey guys
i'm looking for a bigger bag. i have the computrekker AW but it is quickly running out of space.

i have a canon xsi, canon 17-55 2.8, canon 10-22, canon 50, canon 430ex2 and i'm looking to buy the canon 580 ex and the canon 24-70 2.8

i'm going to need more space to put both my flashes in and all my diffusers, batteries, and hoods and whatnot. and i also want the bag to be able to hold my 17'' laptop in the case i go on vacation. i don't care if it's a bag or a roller.

i was looking at the tamrac ex7 which is nice, but doesn't hold a laptop, and the thinktank airport security international... only thing holding me back from the international is i'm unsure if it'll hold my 17 inch laptop, even though it says it does with the divider... does anyone have any experience with it? or can anyone recommend me another bag that'll suit me?

TIA :)

The tamrac expedition 7 has lots of room for a laptop in the front, tons of room for your gear, I use it for a XSi w/10-20, 20D w/70-200, 100-400, 28-135, 430EX, Elan IIe, GPS, rocket blower, that's only in the main compartment, still room for laptop, filters, batteries, cards, what ever else you can think of.

the cyberpack 8 looks cool, but it doesn't have the harness =P
where do you put the laptop? do you just put it over everything? or is there a specific compartment? (cyberpack 8 and ex7)

thanks!

Harness? The CyberPack has two large, padded shoulder straps. It also has a waist belt and attachment points for smaller bags. The computer goes in a padded back pocket.

there's a front compartment in the ex.7 that can hold a laptop, mine is not the 7x, but still has the compartment, maybe the "x" adds foam padding to the compartment. go to http://www.tamrac.com/5587.htm (external link) and you'll see.

I carried it from Canada to USA and back last week, no issues, it's supposed to be carry on compatible according to their website, as long as it's less than 20 lbs, mine was well over that, 25+ i think, but no one weighed it, just don't make it look heavy-pretend you're not having a hard time carrying it (even if you are!), if you're stuck...take your heaviest body/lens and carry it around your neck, you're allowed 2 pieces of carry-on luggage, and a camera is acceptable, I saw a guy carrying 2x 1Ds, both with heavy lenses through the airport with no troubles.

I don't have a bag recommendation, but I can tell you for the travel piece, you're allowed a camera bag PLUS 2 carry on bags. If you go to the TSA's website, there is a page describing the allowance of a camera bag as well as 2 carry-ons. That way you can easily get past security if you print it out. The caveat being that that only gets you past security, and it's up to the airline and the specific flight to limit what you carry on. I've always carried 3 bags when I travel (Crumpler Company Embarrassment as my Camera bag), a duffel bag carrying clothes and a Tumi rolling laptop bag and have been limited once on a flight because they were so booked. I just gate checked the duffel bag and it was waiting for me as I was leaving the plane.

Name is Peter and here is my gear:
Canon 5D II, Canon 7D, Canon 40D
Glass - Zeiss 21 f/2.8 ZE, Canon 35 f/1.4L, Canon 40 f/2.8 STM, Canon 24-70 f/2.8
L, Canon 85 f/1.2L II, Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS II, Canon 500 f/4L IS
Speedlite 580ex II, 430ex - Gitzo GT-3541XLS w/ Arca B1

TaDa,

While the TSA allows for the 1+1+1 for photographers, the new wording on the TSA web site leaves a lot of room for the airlines to say "no." The original wording, which can be found on my site for traveling photogs in this post: http://flyingwithfish.blogspot.com …r-2006-united-states.html (external link) , was more effective, the new wording says it is up to the airlines to allow 1+1+1, rather than the standard 1+1 bags.

Many US airlines now specifically have a policy in place that states they do not allow for a camera bag to be allowed on in addition to the carry on + personal item (hence 1+1 , or 1+1+1 bags). You may catch someone who does not know the rules, in which case you want to print off the screen shot I have in the above link to Flying With Fish (external link)

The fact that you carry 3 bags on every flight is interesting. I have tested the rule, simply to test the rule, on 20 flights since February 2008 and been denied on 16 bags while flying on US Airways (even with an email from US Airways Corporate Communications stating that they did allow a camera bag in addition to a carry on and personal item),United Airlines, Delta Airlines, Horizon and Southwest Airlines.

Southwest, the last US airline to have an established media preboard policy, has a specific policy readily available to gate agents that says they do not adhere to the TSA baggage allowance.

Having checked with many photogs who have also tried to board with three bags have stated being denied at least twice in the last year by the following airlines
Alaska Airlines
American Airlines
Continental Airlines
Delta Airlines
Frontier Airlines
Horizon
Midwest Airlines
Southwest Airlines
Spirit Airlines
Sun Country
United Airlines
US Airways
Virgin America

For more info on traveling more effectively as a photog check out www.flyingwithfish.com (external link)

Happy Flying!

Here is a direct link to an image the old TSA wording that is more effective with airlines:

Airlines have really cracked down on the 1+1 rule over the past few months. I think 1) they're trying to reduce weight on planes and 2) if they can't reduce weight, then they force people to check in bags, which many now charge for.
