Canon doesn't care about anything but money (given). Marketing is sometimes about delayed gratification, thus the teaser. It's not about making people happy all the time, but instead getting them interested.
Sony at 24 megapixels, Nikon has pro AF systems in lower priced bodies, etc etc...no response except the teaser, and yet the teaser still draws lots of attention, even though it has no substance. It's extremely likely that Canon's updates will not have a pro AF system or a 24 megapixel sensor, and to add sensor IS would be no evolution whatsoever because the technology is already done by Sony. Movie mode is also included in a Nikon model.
What's left?
Pixel binning, comparable D3-like ISO6400 at 21 megapixels?.....Honestly, what can they do? It simply isn't going to be spectacular because it can't be; the competition is too stiff.
