Ok... so I went for a cruise with a bunch of Mustang guys back in August. I was riding along with my friend Scott... at one point we got on the expressway (M-59). Everyone was in a nice single file line... and we were towards the front. I asked Scott to pull out into the other lane. I told him I was going to hang out the window with my camera and see if the other guys knew what to do! So here is my first attempt...

4) Yes, this is a genuine GT500KR! (this was actually in I-94 LOL)

slower shutter speed and less saturation and these could be pretty awesome.

Thanks!

It was a pretty spontaneous thing... I did try a slower shutter but everyone was cruising 75MPH and with the ROUGH Michigan roads I was having a hard time keeping the cars sharp.. ;)

Nice pictures. On the first one the HDR effect ruins it for me, but it's otherwise pretty good.

You can definitely see there's some movement in there, but a blurred background would help even more.

If the last picture had a bit more blurred background it would be a great picture.

I kinda like lower angles on this kind of shots, but that's not always possbile, except if you can make your pictures out of the luggage compartment of a car.

Really didn't try for any kind of HDR effect... did have a CPL on... Went back to the RAW file and created a new JPG. No other PP than the resize...

Definitely would have tried for more blur.. but the cars were going by pretty quickly so I was only getting a couple of shots of each car... also was a fairly busy road and did pass one LEO.. The guy did a pretty good job though considering I didn't give them any instructions! LOL!

BTW.. some of my other pics made in to Modified Mustang and Fords on-line content, including a version of the last picture:

thanks for all the input!

Hehe, it was just lacking some blacks then. Looks awesome right now.

And yeah, for this kind of shots you've got to take your time and collaborate very much with the other drivers. Considering your circumstances you did a good job !

slower shutter speed

I have to agree. The cars look good. Even the poles growing out of them are fairly sharp. ;)

Like others have said, slow the shutter down. I shoot at 1/10 for ever 10mph...1/60th at 60mph etc

Thanks guys!

Yep, I would have definitely gone with a slower shutter but due to the circumstances, like running out of road, lots of traffice, no communication with drivers, ROUGH ROAD, police (i had to take my seat belt off..), harsh overhead Sun, I figured I would get some picture that I knew the cars would be sharp... I knew I was not going to get a lot of shots and I didn't want them ALL to be soft... LOL

I hear so much about poles growing out of cars, but what's the deal. In some cases it looks just plain nasty, but sometimes people are saying it to me just because they read it on the web while it doesn't make any sense.

For example, take this (external link) shot. Someone said to me: "Wow man ! There are trees growing out the back of the car !", so I said: "Yeah, but does it look weird ?", and he said: "Nope, it's just something I read on the internet which most people do find look weird.."

So what I want to say is that it looks awful in some cases, but people choose the wrong backgrounds most of the time. With a good background it doesn't care if theres something growing out of the car. :)

Funny you should bring this up... I took some shots or my friend on his motorcycle. I got a really nice pan shot of him, except there was a telephone pole basically growing out of his handle bars... I thought dang, that would be great shot except for the pole... and when I posted it here, got the same kind of comments. Well, I gave the picture to my friend and he LOVED it! And when I said "Yeah, but the pole ruins it" He told me he actually LIKE the pole! He said to him it added more to the sense of motion. (the pole was blurry but you could still tell it was a pole! LOL!)

So i guess you just never know! LOL!

BTW... here's one more... it's a bit slower at 1/100... No poles... just a nice overpass... ;)

Funny to hear about the motorcycle shot :).

Well, in this shot there is a pole, which is the brown one in the rear of the car. I'm sure some people will say that it looks annoying, but that's just total bull**** if you ask me. That's what I mean. You said there aren't poles, which means for me that there are no annoying things growing out of the car. But someone else will say that the brown viaduct thing is irritating, just because they read about a "rule" on an automotive photography website. It just doesn't make any sense... but I feel that I'm repeating here and the message is quite clear ;).

It's about being aware of what's happening in your shot. Granted that it's hard to see what's happening when you're shooting a moving car, but there's no reason not to shoot extra shots & throw out the "Pole shots"? It's not as if you had to pay for film?

For example, take this shot.

I don't mind the trees in that one. They lead into the car. I think you might have cropped it better, though. Is the car the subject, or the landscape with the car in it?

He told me he actually LIKE the pole! He said to him it added more to the sense of motion. (the pole was blurry but you could still tell it was a pole!

Hard to say without seeing the shot.

someone else will say that the brown viaduct thing is irritating,

I don't mind it in that particular shot.

So what I want to say is that it looks awful in some cases, but people choose the wrong backgrounds most of the time. With a good background it doesn't care if theres something growing out of the car.

IMO, with a good background, there's nothing growing out of the car.
