Dynatran by Amvona.....they have some really nice ones you can snag on eBay on the cheap.

Agreed. I got this one (external link) that's a Manfrotto clone for a pretty right price. Admittedly it would be even better with a more robust head, but the legs are more than fine.

Did you lose Digital Photo Professional (DPP)? Get it here (external link). Cursing at your worse-than-a-map reflector? Check out this vid! (external link)

$50-100 range is almost exclusively populated by junk.

you can get a really secure and legitimate tripod and ball head from amvona for around $100 off of eBay. I got mine this week.I have another thread in here asking how it compares to other brands... but this being my first over $50 purchase of tripods... I love t this rig.

I like mine...but then I'm not much of a tripod user. I might hate it if I was a hardcore landscaper. *shrug* Ignorance is bliss though. :D

Yes, mine is VERY heavyduty and well constructed.

I got the AT-858 for $24 shipped (with a little luck and esnipe) on eBay and a ATH-A03 ballhead from Amvona as well (basically an Arca-Swiss clone) for $60 shipped (ebay again).

The problem I can see others having is the weight, it is NOT a carbon fiber tripod. So the dainty folks may get tired of carrying it around for extended periods.

I'm a fairly muscular bloke, so the weight is of little concern to me.

I'm 19... I think I can handle the weight!

As for the tripod's maximum load, I don't have any telephoto lenses (longest is the 28-135) so I think 7.7 lbs max weight will be more than fine.

So I should get something like this here:

What's funny... I ended up with two Amvona tripods... one cf and the other aluminum alloy... they're basically the same weight... a little over 3.5 lbs. and alloy one is shorter, but expands to the same height. go figure.

Sorry to disappoint you but load ratings are a complete joke and next to worthless. No two mfgs measure them the same - some it is the point the tripod fails, others it is the point where the mfg feels you can't take a sharp image because it isn't stable enough. You are trying to dampen out vibration on the level of about 100um of amplitude (5um is approx one pixel of vibration). It is a game of nits to get it right.

I set out to get a $50 tripod.

I wound up buying a Manfrotto 190XB with 486RC2 head for $180. I'm happy with it so far.
