Right now I am looking to get a 70-200 f2.8 lens. Anyone out here have the Sigma? Is it compatible with the canon 40D? I cannot afford the canon lens at this time. I will be using this lens for hockey, drag racing and low light performances/concerts/night clubs acts and practically anything because I love photography so much. thanks for any input.

i her its a really nice lens.. and there are a couple people who have them on here, and i have seen some really nice things come with them.

and of course they are compatible with the canon.. as long as you make sure you buy the canon mount..

i myself am thinking about picking this lens up too.. i personally cant justify the cost of the L version

ehh its not that. i just dont usually find myself in a sutuation where i need IS. but for me.. because im not a pro. and i dont make a whole ton of money on photos.. that i just cant justify the cost of it. im still in the learning stage. and i would eventually like to get to the point where i can market my work.. and when that happens.. sure ill probably upgrade for shizz and grins.

I have this lens and love it. It's awesome: great IQ, fast focusing, and I like the build too. Mine is used mainly for sports, although I've started using it for portraits and candids too. You might want to consider looking round for a used one. I bought mine used off this forum, for a really good price, and am very happy with it.

I've been looking at this len as well. I don't have the extra money for the Canon and I've heard that the Tamron is slow on AF at night or I would have gone with it. Any insight would be appreciated.:D I don't want to make a purchase at this amount of money and be disappointed.

Great lens! Love mine. Use it for just about everything. Buy new and get a full warranty. Had it calibrated by Sigma and got it back in 5 days. Excellent service.

I have the Sigma 70-200 and love it. They are very good for the cost. The IQ is awesome on the 70-200 as well. Trust me, you wont be disappointed with that purchase. I recently upgraded to the Canon 70-200 2.8 L IS, but I will surely keep the Sigma as a backup. Just in case!!! Go for it though, you wont be disappointed. Also just to toss it out there as another option. If you feel you can spend a couple hundred more you can pick up a refurbished Canon 70-200 2.8L (Non IS) from Adorama camera for $999.95. Just a thought to ponder!

The 70-200 2.8 from Sigma was my first fast zoom lens, and I was so impressed with the quality and focusing speed that I bought a Sigma 24-70 2.8 to go with it. I love 'em both.

I agree on not justifying canons cost. I myself am interested in purchasing the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 . You really dont need the IS with the f2.8 anyway.

Here is a review on youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCbB27r8ENU (external link)

Some of us do need it for what we're shooting.

FWIW, the only reason that I didn't go for the Sigma was because it didn't have IS. From my experience, the build is good, the quality is excellent, and there are versions that also have macro capabilities. If they had an OS version, I probably would've picked that up instead of the Canon. I'm VERY happy with my Canon lens, though :)

I'm sure you'll be happy with either one as they're both excellent.
