I am taking the family to see the Monster Trucks Thunder Nationals Sat night at an indoor arena in Rockford IL. plan on using my Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 and my 50mm f1.8. Does anybody know what kinda settings I should start at to get good stop action? will probably be to far away to even use my 420ex speed lite. so will only have the arena lights. went there last year and used my Sony f707 and got this photo hoping to do even better this year. Thanks for any suggestions that will help me out.
), set in AV mode and use maximum aperture (2.8 or 1.8 ). The camera will select the highest possible shutter speeds in theses instances. You would probably need 1/250 second or more to stop the action, but may be able to get away with 1/100 second or more if you have no choice. If this is the case try panning with the trucks (assuming they are moving in a single direction, and not choatically) and you will get some background blur which gives the impression of speed (also gives radial blur to the wheels).
