Using flash - I NEED HELP!

Help! My husband's band is playing tonight and he asked me to take pictures. Last time I did that, it was a very small venue with HORRIBLE lighting and I had to use flash most of the time, which made everyone look washed out! I don't have an external flash and I was wondering if there are any tricks for diffusing my on-camera flash so my shots are more balanced. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks for you time! :D

A piece of milk bottle might work if they are the same in the US, over here the material is very similar to the color of a stofen
